About Us

Ocius Technology is an Australian company dedicated to developing and deploying cutting edge Uncrewed Surface Vehicles (USVs). Our vessel's harness Wind, Solar and Wave power to remain at sea collecting vital data for Defence and Civilian applications.

We are under contracts with RAN, RNZN and USA and are responding in an agile way to an ambitious program of building and deploying multiple USVs for operations around Australia and beyond.

About the Role

As a Software Engineer, you will develop and maintain the software systems that control, monitor, and operate the Bluebottle USV platform, working at the intersection of robotics, mechatronics, embedded systems, and autonomous marine technology. The role spans onboard Linux and embedded systems that interact closely with the vessel's hardware, sensors, actuators, power systems, navigation, and communications equipment. You will write C/C++ software that runs in the lab, on the boat, and ultimately at sea.

The Engineering function is responsible for maintaining and enhancing the design of Ocius assets, particularly the Bluebottle platform, while actively responding to operational and production requirements to ensure continuous improvement.

A typical day as a Software Engineer could include:

  • Writing and improving the C++ codebase controlling the vessel, from actuator commands and autopilot logic to mission-level behaviour.

  • Integrating software with embedded hardware, including CAN buses, NMEA2000, power systems, navigation instruments, communications equipment, and sensor payloads.

  • Working with ARM-based Linux systems as the primary onboard compute environment.

  • Maintaining and improving STM32 firmware running FreeRTOS, including software managing power, sensors, and actuators.

  • Working alongside mechanical, electrical, mechatronics, and systems engineers to make complete systems function reliably.

  • Partnering with GCOs (our operators) to understand how the platform performs in the field and improve it for operational use.

  • Deploying, testing, and supporting software in the lab, on vessels, and during sea trials.

  • Improving a substantial legacy codebase through refactoring, rewriting, and adding the structure and tests it needs.

Selection Criteria

  • Bachelor's Degree in Software or Mechatronics Engineering, Computer Science or a related field

  • Strong C/C++ programming ability.

  • Experience working in Linux-based environments, particularly ARM-based systems.

  • Experience working with or close to hardware, including embedded systems, sensors, actuators, or communications buses.

  • Experience collaborating with engineers from other disciplines, such as mechanical, electrical, mechatronics, or systems engineering.

  • Understanding of the software development lifecycle, from requirements through to testing and deployment.

  • Ability to work in a CI/CD environment, including building, testing, and deploying software with appropriate version control and configuration management.

There is scope for algorithm development and machine learning work, including improving autonomous decision-making and developing surveillance sensor system capabilities - somethings we would love you to be interested in!

If you are an engineer who enjoys range, practical problem-solving, and seeing their work operate in the real world and has a passion for clear communication, we encourage you to apply!
