Software Engineer - Onsite- Melbourne
At Blackmagic Design, we build some of the world's most advanced video production tools—from digital film cameras to colour correction software—used by creative professionals across film, television, and live broadcast.
We're a global company, but our Global Headquarters are right here in South Melbourne, where all design, engineering, and manufacturing is done in-house. Since 2001, we've been creating high-performance digital cinema technology that's used everywhere from Hollywood blockbusters to YouTube content creation.
Our software and hardware products push the limits of real-time GPU processing and platform integration—and we're looking for a C++ Engineer with a strong GPU and systems background to join the team.
What you'll be doing
Developing and maintaining GPU-accelerated C++ code across desktop platforms (Windows, macOS, Linux), working close to the OS and the graphics stack
Writing and optimising real-time rendering, compute, and colour-processing pipelines using Metal, Vulkan, and/or DirectX
Profiling and tuning GPU workloads for throughput, latency, and memory bandwidth in demanding real-time video pipelines
Understanding of GPU drivers, kernel-level components, and low-level system services that sit between hardware and application
Building internal GPU toolkits and rendering frameworks that other engineering teams rely on for cross-platform development
Working with OS-level and GPU vendor APIs for device I/O, memory management, process/thread management, and hardware communication
Debugging platform- and GPU-specific issues across Windows, macOS, and Linux, including driver installation, permissions, and system integration quirks
Collaborating with hardware engineers to bring up new GPU and video hardware, ensuring reliable, high-performance OS-level communication
Participating in end-to-end product cycles—from early prototypes through to shipping releases
What we're looking for
5+ years of professional C++ experience, with solid grounding in modern C++ (11/14/17)
Hands-on experience or knowledge of at least one major GPU API—Metal, Vulkan, or DirectX—in a production or performance-critical setting
Hands-on experience or knowledge of working at the OS/systems level on at least two of: Windows, macOS, Linux
Understanding of GPU drivers, system services, or kernel extensions
Comfort working with low-level APIs (e.g. Win32/WDK, IOKit/DriverKit, Linux kernel modules or udev) alongside GPU/graphics APIs
Hands-on experience or knowledge of building or maintaining internal GPU tools, SDKs, or rendering toolkits used by other developers
A practical, get-it-shipped mindset with strong attention to real-time performance and stability
Bonus: experience with compute shaders, colour science/image processing pipelines, Qt, Python scripting, or mobile GPU platforms (iOS/Android)
Why work with us
Build GPU-driven tools used daily by top creatives around the world
Work on the deep systems and rendering layer that everything else in the product depends on
Collaborate with a talented, multidisciplinary team in a hands-on engineering environment
Work onsite in our purpose-built South Melbourne HQ with full in-house design, prototyping, and manufacturing
Join a team that values engineers who care about squeezing every bit of performance out of the hardware
