Software Engineer - Python, AWS, Kafka
Summary
Contract software engineer building the real-time event backbone of a high-volume platform: writing production-grade Python event-driven services and streaming pipelines on AWS with Kafka (MSK/Confluent) at the centre, owning latency, throughput and reliability. Hybrid role, 3 days/week in Melbourne CBD, 6-month rolling contract with no sponsorship.
Millions of events move through this platform every day, and the business needs them handled in near real time. You’ll design and build the services that make that happen, working in Python on AWS with Kafka at the centre.
What you’ll be doing
- Building and running event-driven services and streaming pipelines at enterprise scale
- Writing production-grade Python, with solid engineering habits (testing, CI/CD, code review)
- Working with Kafka (MSK or Confluent) and AWS services like Kinesis, Lambda, ECS/EKS and Glue
- Owning latency, throughput and reliability, not just shipping pipelines
- Working with product and data teams to get data where it needs to be, fast
- Strong software engineering background, with Python as your main language (Java, Go, Scala or .NET also welcome)
- Proven Kafka experience at scale in an enterprise environment
- Hands-on AWS, especially streaming and data services
- Microservices and API experience
- Experience with low latency or high-volume systems
- Databricks / Spark Structured Streaming
- Flink or Kafka Streams
- Terraform, Kubernetes
- 6-month rolling contract (most people here stay for years)
- Hybrid, 3 days a week in the Melbourne CBD
- Melbourne based with full working rights, no sponsorship
