As a member of the Messaging team, you’ll work on maintaining and improving our legacy systems, ensuring they continue to scale and perform efficiently. We are Cloud-deployed across multiple regions and make extensive use of containerised Java applications. Our approach emphasises modular, simple, and clear software with a focus on external open-source libraries and tools to achieve our goals efficiently.
You will join a strong team of engineers, reporting to the Engineering Manager. Your role will be crucial in helping shape the team’s success. You’ll contribute to designing and developing solutions, leveraging existing infrastructure, and delivering faster, accurate results. With expertise in software architecture and SDLC, you’ll work across various stacks and languages.
Key responsibilities:
- Write clean, well-tested code for well-defined features and fixes across the team’s tech stack, incorporating feedback from senior engineers through code review.
- Deliver work in line with Agile ways of working, actively participating in ceremonies and contributing to incremental delivery, feedback and continuous improvement.
- Write and maintain automated tests for the code you ship and verify behaviour before release.
- Build hands-on competence with AWS and the team’s cloud infrastructure, progressively taking on infrastructure-related tasks.
- Participate in code reviews and pairing sessions, both to receive feedback and to build familiarity with the wider codebase.
- Work with Product and QA on assigned features to support timely, quality delivery and to clarify requirements before implementation begins.
- Take part in incident response, acting on production issues rather than waiting to be tasked – investigate, mitigate and follow through on remediation, escalating early when the problem exceeds your current knowledge or access.
- Deploy and monitor your own changes, tracking error rates, server load and response times after release; act on anomalies you detect – roll back, fix forward or raise an incident – and flag for help when the right action is not clear.
- Maintain documentation for the features and components you work on, so that knowledge is not held in one place.
- Use AI-assisted coding tools thoughtfully to accelerate learning and delivery, while retaining full understanding and ownership of the code you ship.
- Continuously build technical depth in the team’s domain – messaging APIs, distributed systems and cloud operations – through deliberate learning and applied practice.
To be successful in this role you will possess the following skills and attributes:
- Proven experience as a Software Engineer
- Practical experience contributing to a shared codebase, including having work reviewed and revised.
- Exposure to Agile delivery in a team setting.
- Experience building or consuming APIs
- Foundational proficiency in a modern tech stack such as Java, Spring and ReactJS, or a closely comparable equivalent.
- Working knowledge of RESTful API concepts and an understanding of how distributed, cloud-based systems are designed and operated.
- Familiarity with version control, CI/CD pipelines and automated testing practices.
- Exposure to at least one major cloud platform – AWS preferred, GCP or Azure acceptable.
- Understanding of the software development life cycle beyond coding: solution options, planning, documentation, monitoring, automation and incident management.
- Competent and considered use of AI coding assistants (e.g. GitHub Copilot, Claude), paired with the judgement to review and validate their output.
- Dream Big – a strong drive to learn, curiosity about how systems work, and willingness to attempt problems beyond current experience.
- Win Together – a great communicator who works openly in a collaborative, distributed team and shares knowledge readily.
- Keep it Simple – communicates clearly and directly, including when raising blockers or admitting uncertainty.
- Make it Happen – detail-oriented, follows through on commitments, and takes pride in writing reliable, working software.
- Takes feedback well and acts on it; a solution-oriented mindset with an eye for problem solving.
- Bachelor’s degree in computer science, Software Engineering or a related field
- Preferred but not essential: cloud certification (e.g. AWS Certified Cloud Practitioner).
We are committed to building an engaged and talented workforce that represents an environment that is inclusive, supports flexibility and welcomes diversity.
Our values of Dream Big, Win together, Keep it simple and Make it happen are the foundation for fostering an environment where diversity of thinking, skills and experiences are embraced, delivering innovation and better business results.
