About the role
You’ll build the backend and cloud architecture connecting Cortex controllers to Synapse, our development environment for industrial machines. Your work will span APIs, device connectivity, telemetry pipelines, data storage, and the application features engineers use to deploy, monitor, and debug their systems.
We’re looking for strong backend and distributed systems judgment, backed by hands-on software delivery. You’ll make decisions about how services communicate, how data moves, and how the system behaves as usage grows. You’ll also build the frontend features needed to deliver a complete product experience. Working directly with the founders and embedded team, you’ll own software from design through deployment, operation, and improvement.
Gardena, CA • Full-time • On-site five days a week
What you’ll build
- Architect backend services and cloud systems for controller connectivity, application state, and industrial data, with clear paths to thousands or millions of users and devices.
- Develop reliable APIs, data models, and service boundaries that support growth without making the early product unnecessarily complex.
- Build telemetry ingestion, storage, and querying, with explicit decisions about throughput, latency, consistency, and failure handling.
- Own production reliability and observability; investigate incidents and remove bottlenecks using measured evidence.
- Deliver TypeScript/React features in Synapse for deployment, monitoring, debugging, and working with machine data.
- Ship tested software through CI/CD with clear rollout, rollback, and recovery paths.
- Work with customers and embedded engineers to turn real machine workflows into useful application and cloud capabilities.
What you’ve already proven
- Strong engineering depth demonstrated through at least one of the following: personal architecture ownership in a production system scaled from an early product to thousands or millions of users or devices; software engineering experience at a FAANG company; or an engineering background from a leading engineering university.
- You’ve designed, implemented, and operated production backend services and can explain your personal contribution and technical decisions.
- Strong networking, API design, database, concurrency, and distributed systems fundamentals.
- You can explain a production bottleneck or failure you resolved, the evidence you used, and the resulting improvement.
- Depth in a backend language such as Go, Rust, Python, or C++, and the ability to deliver application features in TypeScript/React.
- You use automated testing, instrumentation, and operational feedback to improve the systems you own.
- You can turn incomplete requirements into useful software and communicate tradeoffs across reliability, performance, cost, and delivery speed.
What gets you here faster
- Connected device fleets, industrial telemetry, or cloud services supporting physical systems.
- Developer tools, IDEs, simulation, or production AI features.
- Ownership across backend architecture and frontend workflows in an early product.
