Software Engineer with Backend Focus

We develop Industry 4.0 solutions for precision engineering, drawing on many years of experience in industrial automation. Our deployed turnkey and bespoke products serve customers ranging from SMEs to multinational corporations.

We are growing our Singapore software team to strengthen our existing products and develop the next generation of smart manufacturing solutions. Our local team is small and highly capable, bringing together experienced engineers and a technical designer with expertise across software, automation, data and digital visualisation. Team members contribute across disciplines and work closely on technical and product decisions.

What we build

· Production planning and execution systems: Computer-Aided Process Planning (CAPP) and Manufacturing Execution Systems (MES).

· Industrial telemetry systems: Real-time acquisition and aggregation of CNC, robotics and sensor data.

· 3D Digital Twin applications: Unreal Engine 5 applications that visualise factory shopfloors in real time.

· Factory dashboards: Production monitoring, data analytics and factory management systems.

· Mobile Digital Twin: A cloud-powered iOS and Android application that enables customers to monitor their factories from their phones, recognised with the 2025 SICC Most Scalable Collaboration award.

Our engineering environment spans C#/ASP/.NET, C/C++, SQL Server, MySQL, Windows and Linux, alongside web, mobile and Unreal Engine technologies. We use technologies such as MQTT, gRPC, REST and Docker to connect and deploy components across these systems.

Where we are heading

We plan to build on these deployed products with AI-powered and agentic solutions that help manufacturers improve production efficiency and reduce overheads and waste. This includes adding AI capabilities to existing software and exploring a new generation of products designed around AI from the outset.

You will have opportunities to contribute to this direction while working on systems that customers already use. As you develop product and domain knowledge, you can take greater ownership of components and modules and contribute more broadly to design decisions.

Your role

You will develop, enhance and maintain software with a primary focus on backend components. Work may include existing products, bespoke versions for new projects, integrations and new AI-enabled functionality.

You will work on a subset of our products, with likely initial assignments discussed during recruitment based on your skills, experience, interests and project needs. Responsibilities will evolve as projects develop. You are not expected to have experience across every product or technology listed here.

We expect you to deliver well-scoped components independently, with senior engineers providing guidance on unfamiliar systems and wider architectural decisions.

Key responsibilities

· Develop and maintain backend components, services and product functionality, including bespoke implementations for customer projects.

· Translate requirements into component designs and test cases, identifying real-world edge cases, failure scenarios and integration implications.

· Integrate components developed by colleagues and investigate issues across system boundaries.

· Test, debug and review code; help resolve issues affecting existing and new customers.

· Participate in technical and project discussions, explain design decisions and raise uncertainties or roadblocks early.

· Maintain useful documentation covering designs, interfaces, tests, deployment and support procedures as relevant to your work.

· Research relevant technologies, contribute to AI-enabled development and product capabilities, and share findings with the team.

Technical requirements

· At least 3 years of relevant software development experience, with proficiency in C++ and/or C#/.NET and experience working with existing codebases. Experience with C++11/14 is relevant to our work; experience with later standards is also welcome.

· Good understanding of object-oriented design, common data structures and algorithms, familiarity with software design patterns, and practical application of SOLID principles, including the ability to explain design choices and trade-offs.

· Familiarity with the software development lifecycle, including requirements analysis, design, implementation, testing, deployment and maintenance.

· Experience translating requirements into software module designs and test cases, including identifying real-world edge cases and failure scenarios.

· Good understanding of concurrency, shared state, race conditions, synchronisation and resource management.

· Ability to debug systematically, understand unfamiliar code and maintain existing functionality when making changes.

· Working knowledge of Git, including branches, merges and straightforward conflict resolution, and SQL, including queries, joins and basic data updates.

Additional experience

Experience in any of the following is an advantage. These areas are optional, and we do not expect expertise across the full list.

· Industrial systems: CAPP, MES, CNC controllers, robotics, AGVs/AMRs, automated production workflows, OPC UA or MTConnect.

· Data and AI: Time-series data, signal processing, computer vision, applied machine learning, Python, LLM applications, agentic workflows, MCP, RAG or model deployment.

· Backend and infrastructure: Database design, network protocols, security, Linux, shell scripting, Docker, Jenkins, CI/CD or Azure/AWS deployment.

· Other product technologies: Web development, React, ASP.NET Framework & .NET Core, mobile development or Unreal Engine.

AI-assisted development

We encourage effective use of AI for development, learning and problem solving, with company-provided access to ChatGPT and Codex. You should be willing to learn these tools while retaining responsibility for your deliverables: understanding the code and design decisions, verifying correctness and maintaining engineering standards. Prior experience building AI systems is an advantage.

Working style and communication

We value reliable engineering, curiosity and ownership. You should be comfortable learning independently, asking questions, discussing difficulties openly and working with colleagues to find practical solutions. Adaptability matters in a lean team where projects can span several disciplines.

Working proficiency in English is required for collaboration within the Singapore team. Working proficiency in Mandarin and written Chinese is an advantage for technical discussions, documentation and collaboration with colleagues and customers in China, where we have a substantial business presence.
