Job title

Cloud Infrastructure & Virtualization Engineer

Department

Infrastructure / Cloud Platform Engineering

Employment type

Full-time

Experience

2–4 years in Linux, virtualization and data-centre infrastructure

Location

on-site

Reports to

Infrastructure Manager / Platform Engineering Lead

The engineer will own day-to-day platform health, lead troubleshooting across compute, network and storage layers, and keep technical documentation for every system they touch clear.

Key responsibilities

Virtualization & compute platform

  • Install, configure and maintain KVM/QEMU hypervisors and manage VMs through libvirt, virsh and virt-manager (or platforms such as OpenStack, Proxmox or oVirt).
  • Provision, clone, snapshot, migrate (live and cold) and decommission virtual machines and templates.
  • Plan capacity for CPU, memory and storage; tune performance with CPU pinning, NUMA awareness, huge pages and virtio drivers.
  • Maintain high availability for hypervisor clusters and handle host maintenance with minimal downtime.

Linux & server administration

  • Administer enterprise Linux (RHEL, Rocky, Ubuntu, Debian): packages, services, kernel parameters, users, permissions and SELinux/AppArmor.
  • Configure and maintain physical servers, including BIOS/UEFI, RAID controllers, firmware and out-of-band management (iDRAC, iLO, IPMI).
  • Diagnose hardware faults and coordinate replacements with vendors.
  • Automate routine tasks with Bash or Python and configuration tools such as Ansible.

Networking & SDN

  • Configure Linux networking: bridges, bonding/LACP, VLANs, routing and firewalls (iptables/nftables, firewalld).
  • Design and operate virtual networks using Open vSwitch, VXLAN/GENEVE overlays and SDN controllers (e.g. OVN, OpenStack Neutron, OpenDaylight).
  • Work with the network team on switching, routing (OSPF/BGP basics), load balancing, DNS and DHCP.
  • Troubleshoot connectivity with tcpdump, Wireshark, ip, ss and traceroute.

Storage

  • Manage block, file and object storage for VMs: LVM, iSCSI, NFS, Fibre Channel and SAN/NAS arrays.
  • Allocate and expand volumes, manage storage pools and qcow2/raw images, and monitor capacity and IOPS.
  • Support distributed storage such as Ceph or GlusterFS where deployed.

Database management

  • Install, configure and maintain databases used by platform services (MySQL/MariaDB, PostgreSQL; familiarity with NoSQL a plus).
  • Handle backups, restores, user access, replication, query performance and routine health checks.

Technical documentation

  • Write and maintain architecture diagrams, build guides, runbooks, SOPs, network and IP plans, and change records.
  • Document incidents with root-cause analysis and record lessons learned.
  • Keep a knowledge base current so other engineers and the support team can operate the platform.

Operations & support

  • Monitor the platform and respond to alerts and incidents within SLA.
  • Follow ITIL change, incident and problem management processes.
  • Apply security patches and hardening baselines across hosts and guests.
  • Join an on-call rotation as required.

Skills matrix

Skills are grouped into the buckets most job portals and hiring teams use: primary, secondary and good to have, with a tools list for keyword matching. Proficiency: Advanced = designs and owns independently; Intermediate = handles routine work independently; Basic = understands concepts, works with guidance.
