Solution Architect - AWS Integration & API Gateway
Description
We are seeking a Solution Architect to design and lead a central email gateway. It will sit between the client's commerce platform, its middleware (enterprise service bus) and a new email service provider, and will carry all business-critical transactional email, such as order, shipping, refund and account notifications. The gateway offers two integration models:
- a pass-through API for systems that are ready to use the new provider directly
- a backward-compatible API that mimics the legacy provider, so existing systems only need to change an endpoint
The Architect will own the AWS target architecture, the versioned API contracts, a configuration-driven mapping model, and the resilience design needed to make sure no email is lost or sent twice. The role leads a small cross-functional team on a short build window, drives technical decisions with the client's architects, and owns cutover readiness and early-life support.
Architecture & Design
- Own the AWS target architecture across edge, API Gateway, private networking, load-balancing and ECS Fargate integration, containerized compute, eventing, audit and data flows
- Define versioned OpenAPI contracts for the pass-through and backward-compatible APIs
- Design a configuration-driven mapping engine for campaign, field and error-code translation
- Design resilience patterns: timeouts, retries with backoff, circuit breaker, idempotency and dead-letter queue (DLQ) handling
Design the Security & Observability Framework
Technical Leadership
- Lead discovery and capture existing integration contracts from live traffic
- Set engineering standards and review all code, including AI-generated code
- Guide developers, DevOps and QA on design, testability and performance
- Establish AI-assisted application-building workflows using AI approved
Stakeholder & Delivery
- Present options and recommendations to the client's architecture and platform teams
- Coordinate the ecommerce, middleware and email provider teams through integration and SIT
- Own cutover planning, go/no-go criteria and early-life support
Security & Compliance
- Ensure OAuth2 machine-to-machine authentication, encryption, least-privilege IAM and PII masking
- Align audit retention and the data purge approach with GDPR/CCPA requirements
Required Skills & Competencies
- Strong solution architecture experience on AWS: API Gateway, ECS/Fargate, SQS, EventBridge, Secrets Manager, IAM and KMS
- Configuration management using AppConfig or DynamoDB; observability with CloudWatch and OpenTelemetry/ADOT or X-Ray; CI/CD and infrastructure-as-code design.
- Proven design of API gateways or enterprise integration layers for high-volume transactional systems
- Hands-on with Node.js/TypeScript or Java/Spring Boot microservices
- Strong grasp of resilience patterns, idempotency and event-driven design
- OpenAPI-first design and contract testing practices
- Excellent stakeholder communication and technical leadership
Good-to-Have
- Exposure to email service provider platforms; retail transactional email, ESB/middleware platforms
- Fastify; Akamai WAF; Terraform or AWS CDK; OpenSearch/ELK-based operational search.
- AWS Solutions Architect – Professional certification
Qualifications
- 12+ years of relevant software engineering experience with solution architecture and hands-on technical leadership.
- B.E./B.Tech/MCA or equivalent
- AWS architecture certification is desirable.
