The Opportunity
Canberra Consulting is seeking an experienced Solution Architect – Azure Cloud / PaaS to support a major cloud transformation initiative within a Federal Government department.
This is a senior, EL2-equivalent opportunity responsible for the end-to-end solution architecture supporting the migration of a significant legacy government platform to a secure, scalable, resilient and cloud-native Microsoft Azure Platform-as-a-Service (PaaS) environment.
The successful candidate will provide architectural leadership across application, integration, data, identity, networking, security and cloud platform domains, working closely with architects, cloud engineers, developers, security specialists and project stakeholders.
This role is suited to a senior Solution Architect with strong hands-on understanding of Azure architecture and demonstrated experience delivering complex cloud migration and modernisation initiatives in secure or regulated environments.
The Role
Key responsibilities will include:
- Leading the design and development of the target-state Azure architecture.
- Designing end-to-end Azure solutions across application, data, integration, networking, identity and security domains.
- Providing architectural leadership for legacy application migration, modernisation and cloud-native design.
- Designing and governing Azure landing zones, networking patterns, identity architecture, security controls and governance frameworks.
- Supporting the transition of legacy infrastructure and applications to Azure PaaS services.
- Working closely with cloud engineers, security architects, developers, business stakeholders and delivery partners.
- Developing solution architectures, technical designs, architecture decision records and implementation artefacts.
- Supporting Infrastructure-as-Code, automation, CI/CD and Azure DevOps deployment practices.
- Ensuring architecture aligns with Australian Government security and assurance requirements including the ISM and PSPF.
- Supporting security accreditation, IRAP assessments, remediation activities, operational readiness and Authority to Operate processes.
- Identifying and managing architecture risks, dependencies, technical debt and major technical decisions.
- Providing technical leadership, mentoring and knowledge transfer to project and APS teams.
To be competitive for this opportunity, you will have demonstrated experience in:
- Solution architecture and cloud architecture, ideally with 5+ years' experience in senior architecture roles.
- Designing and delivering complex Microsoft Azure cloud transformation programs.
- Azure Platform-as-a-Service (PaaS) architecture and cloud-native solution design.
- Legacy application migration and modernisation.
- Azure identity, networking, security, governance and landing-zone architecture.
- Infrastructure-as-Code, CI/CD pipelines, automation and DevSecOps practices.
- Working within complex, secure or regulated ICT environments.
- Australian Government security and assurance frameworks, including ISM and PSPF.
- Producing high-quality architecture documentation and technical design artefacts.
- Communicating complex technical concepts to technical and non-technical stakeholders.
Previous experience delivering cloud solutions within Australian Government or Whole-of-Government environments will also be highly regarded.
Contract Details
- Location: Canberra, ACT only
- Working arrangement: Hybrid, with regular onsite attendance required
- Initial term: 12 months
- Extensions: 2 x 6 months
- Expected commencement: October 2026
- Level: Senior / EL2 equivalent
Candidates who do not hold the required minimum NV1 clearance will not be considered for this opportunity.
