The position is located in the Office of Disability Employment Policy. The incumbent serves as a Special Assistant to the Deputy Assistant Secretary. The purpose of this position is to advise the Deputy Assistant Secretary for Disability Employment Policy on issues and policies which enhance the employment of people with disabilities and coordinate the development of Department-wide policy and initiatives. This position is outside the bargaining unit.

Serves as consultant and advisor to the Deputy Assistant Secretary on the formulation of Departmental policies and legislative proposals that enhance employment and training programs for persons with disabilities. Establishes formal crosscutting policy development teams (composed of experts from other functional areas) designed to execute projects and programs that increase employment opportunities and economic independence for people with disabilities. Advises the Deputy Assistant Secretary on the design of a wide variety of national projects to stimulate and enhance employment and training opportunities for persons with disabilities. Coordinates program activities with other DOL and Federal agencies; initiates and establishes effective working relationships with other Federal agencies to coordinate DOL activities with agencies whose programs may impact persons with disabilities, and to elicit their support for cooperative ventures. Represents the Deputy Assistant Secretary for purposes of explaining DOL programs and policies with respect to the employment and training of persons with disabilities.
