  • Design, develop, test, and maintain backend services and applications using Java as part of the Life New Business Simplification effort.

  • Collaborate with the Product Owner, Product Architect, Tech Lead, and fellow engineers on the Trailblazers team to translate business and functional requirements into scalable technical solutions.

  • Participate actively in agile ceremonies (sprint planning, stand-ups, retrospectives, backlog refinement) led by the team's Agile Lead.

  • Write clean, well-tested, maintainable code following Nationwide engineering standards and best practices, including unit and integration testing.

  • Partner with Quality Engineering to support automated testing and ensure defect-free releases.

  • Troubleshoot, debug, and resolve production issues in coordination with the team's designated production support owner.

  • Contribute to code reviews, technical documentation, and continuous improvement of team engineering practices.

  • Work closely with the Product Architect to ensure solutions align with target-state architecture and integration patterns.

  • Support onboarding and knowledge-sharing within the team as it scales.

Required Qualifications

  • Bachelor's degree in Computer Science, Engineering, or related field, or equivalent practical experience.

  • Solid, hands-on experience developing backend applications and services in Java (Java full-stack experience is a plus).

  • Experience working within an Agile/Scrum delivery model.

  • Strong understanding of object-oriented design, RESTful APIs, and microservices architecture.

  • Experience with relational databases and SQL.

  • Strong problem-solving skills and ability to work independently as well as collaboratively within a distributed (India/US) team.

  • Good written and verbal communication skills for collaborating with US and India-based stakeholders.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Experience in the life insurance or financial services domain.

  • Familiarity with front-end frameworks such as Angular, in support of full-stack delivery.

  • Exposure to cloud platforms (e.g., Azure) and CI/CD pipelines.

  • Experience with automated testing tools/frameworks (e.g., Tosca) is a plus, given close collaboration with the team's Quality Engineering function.

  • Prior experience in a large enterprise technology environment, ideally within insurance or financial services.

As a Software Engineer, you will focus primarily on providing high quality, efficient technology solutions to business partners by crafting new software applications or modifying and/or supporting existing packaged or custom-built applications. In this capacity, you’ll analyze, code, configure, test, debug, document and maintain applications.

Job Description

Key Responsibilities:

  • Analyses, solutions, develops, tests, debugs, documents and deploys software according to standards in an agile environment.

  • Applies secure software and systems engineering practices throughout the delivery lifecycle to ensure our data and technology solutions are protected from threats and vulnerabilities.

  • Uses DevSecOps practices, tooling and techniques.

  • Drives continuous improvement and learning through ongoing training, practice and innovation.

  • Manages medium to large project priorities, deadlines and deliverables proactively.

  • Additional responsibilities may include collaboration across teams and adherence to company standards.

Qualifications & Experience:

Education:

Undergraduate studies in computer science, management information systems, or other related degree. Technology experience or non-traditional technology certificates can be substituted for an undergraduate degree.

Experience:
Four or more years of analysis and technology experience.
