Specialist, Software Engineer - Verification and Validation
Summary
Executes hands-on software verification and validation for safety-critical avionics surveillance systems (TCAS, transponders, ADS-B), authoring test cases/procedures, performing structural coverage and requirements traceability, and producing DO-178C certification artifacts. Core stack: DO-178C processes, C, coverage/test tools, RTOS/Linux.
Key Responsibilities
- Accountable for DO-178C software verification and validation activities for Surveillance development projects, including test planning, procedure development, execution, and results documentation; coordinates with US based Acron software engineers as required
- Partner with Software Development Leads, Systems Engineering, and Project Leads to define verification strategies, manage test dependencies, and meet program verification milestones
- Plan, develop, and execute Software Verification Cases and Procedures (SVCPs) in accordance with DO-178C DAL-appropriate objectives, ensuring requirements-based test coverage and traceability to software requirements
- Track and communicate software verification status, open Problem Reports (PRs), and structural coverage metrics (e.g., decision, statement coverage) to project stakeholders
- Author and peer-review Software Verification Results (SVRs), Problem Report dispositions, test reports, and associated DO-178C lifecycle data artifacts
- Perform structural coverage analysis and requirements-based test traceability to satisfy DAL-appropriate DO-178C objectives; identify, document, and disposition coverage gaps through additional tests or analyses
- Support DER/ACO coordination activities and contribute to Software Accomplishment Summary (SAS), Software Configuration Index (SCI), and other certification artifacts required for FAA/EASA approval
Required Qualifications
- BS Degree in Computer Science, Electrical Engineering or equivalent fields required
- 4+ years of hands-on experience executing DO-178B/C software verification activities in a safety-critical avionics or aerospace environment
- Demonstrated experience developing, reviewing, and executing requirements-based software test cases and procedures
- Practical knowledge of DO-178C software verification objectives, software plans, and lifecycle data (e.g., SVCP, SVR, SAS, SCI)
- Direct experience with DO-178B/C software verification activities is REQUIRED (not solely development experience)
- Experience developing with C programming language is required
- Knowledge of engineering design standards for commercial aviation industry
- Good written and verbal communication, interpersonal, and team-working skills required
- Action oriented, results driven, high energy, self-starter, innovative with new approaches to design work, influential with peers and demonstrate critical thinking skills to drive to root cause
Preferred Additional Skills
- Experience with Real Time Operating Systems such as Green Hills, VxWorks or CentOS
- Experience with C++, Python, Visual Basic, Pascal
- Linux
- Experience with Configuration Management and Change Control Tools (such as Git, Bitbucket, ClearCase, Subversion, ClearQuest)
- Experience with Requirement Management tools such as DOORS
- Experience with Agile software development lifecycle
- Experience with emerging AI tools, including prompt engineering and introducing these concepts into existing rigorous safety critical software development environments
- Experience with DevOps concepts and implementations, especially with Continuous Integration and Continuous Testing aspects
- Experience with Jenkins is a plus
- Experience with software test automation tools such as VectorCAST, LDRA Testbed, Cantata, or equivalent structural coverage analysis tools
- Experience with Hardware-in-the-Loop (HIL) or Software-in-the-Loop (SIL) test environments for embedded avionics software
- Familiarity with DO-178C Annex A objectives (Tables A-7 through A-9) and software verification independence requirements
- Experience performing and interpreting structural coverage analysis results
- Experience with test traceability tools linking software requirements to test cases and results (e.g., DOORS, Polarion, Jama)
- Familiarity with formal software test review and approval processes in a DO-178C certification context
