Speech Pathologist at IU Health in Indianapolis provides diagnostic and therapeutic care for pediatric patients with swallowing, communication, and cognitive disorders using ASHA-certified protocols.

Location: Riley Hospital – Acute Care

Shift: Full Time - Therapists do have weekend working requirements (typically 6-7 weekend days every 6 months) as well as working one holiday/holiday weekend a year.

Requirements:

  • Requires a Master's Degree from an accredited academic program in speech pathology; or, if foreign trained, graduation from a speech pathology education program outside the US with educationally equivalent coursework accepted by Indiana PLA.
  • Requires current license in the State of Indiana.
  • Requires a certificate of clinical competence awarded by the American Speech-Language-Hearing Association (ASHA) or eligibility for this certificate.
  • Requires Basic Life Support certification through the AHA.
  • Advanced life support certifications may be required per unit/department specialty according to patient care policies.

Roles and Responsibilities:

Our acute care SLPs treat a mix of oral dysphagia, pharyngeal dysphagia, cognition, and communication needs of our patients. We treat patients across the pediatric age span from prematurity through adolescence. Diagnoses may be congenital or acquired; common medical histories for speech referrals at Riley Hospital are neurologic injuries or disorders, respiratory illnesses, patients with history of prolonged intubations and/or ECMO, tracheostomy, burn related injuries, cerebral palsy, prematurity with related comorbidities, genetic disorders, congenital heart disease, cleft palate, and difficulty feeding. Family competency in carrying out SLP recommendations is a major component of acute care programming.

Performs speech pathology services including diagnostic evaluations to determine level of impairment. After administering the appropriate tests and measures, a treatment plan is designed for improved communication and swallowing. Performs direct patient care services including the supervision of support personnel and students. Willingly participates in related activities in support of patient care, education and department operations.
