Description

This position is listed on behalf of a partner company, which manages all applications and next steps. Our partner is looking for a Sr. Database Administrator based in the United States.

The Sr. Database Administrator will oversee enterprise-wide database environments within a complex, cloud-based SaaS ecosystem, ensuring high availability, reliability, and data integrity. This role is central to maintaining mission-critical database infrastructure, implementing robust disaster recovery strategies, and optimizing performance across distributed environments. You will lead database administration across multiple platforms while strengthening security, data retention, and operational resilience. Working with technology and operations teams, you will drive database modernization, automation, and infrastructure-as-code initiatives. The position offers an opportunity to shape scalable database architecture and improve operational efficiency in a technology-driven healthcare environment. This is a fully remote opportunity for candidates located in the US Eastern or Central time zones, with travel of up to 10%.

Accountabilities

  • Database Infrastructure and High Availability: Design, implement, and maintain enterprise SQL Server infrastructure, maximizing uptime and reliability. Manage complex replication models, including multi-region and real-time replication, as well as high-availability solutions such as clustering and multi-availability-zone deployments.

  • Multi-Platform Database Administration: Support, monitor, and maintain database platforms including SQL Server, Oracle Exadata on AWS, AWS Aurora MySQL, and PostgreSQL. Ensure data consistency across distributed SaaS environments and hybrid-cloud infrastructure.

  • Disaster Recovery and Resilience: Develop and implement comprehensive disaster recovery strategies that meet Recovery Point Objectives (RPO) and Recovery Time Objectives (RTO). Conduct regular disaster recovery exercises, automated failover testing, and resiliency assessments to minimize service disruption.

  • Data Security and Governance: Establish and enforce automated data retention, archiving, and purging policies aligned with industry standards and healthcare compliance requirements. Implement security controls such as transparent data encryption (TDE), role-based access, and unified auditing.

  • Performance Optimization and Capacity Planning: Lead proactive database performance tuning, query optimization, and capacity management for high-volume transactional workloads. Monitor performance metrics, identify resource contention, and implement improvements to enhance reliability and efficiency.

  • Database Modernization: Advise on database modernization strategies, including transitioning legacy systems to cloud-native or containerized architectures. Establish standards for database schema design, storage structures, and automated deployment pipelines.

  • Automation and Operations-as-Code: Promote infrastructure automation using tools such as Terraform and Ansible, alongside CI/CD pipelines. Automate repetitive tasks, improve operational consistency, and mentor team members in modern database operations practices.

  • Operational Standards and Incident Management: Develop standard operating procedures for routine maintenance, patching, and ticket escalation. Lead incident response during critical outages, coordinate technical teams and executive stakeholders, and support distributed operations teams working across time zones.

  • Cost and License Management: Analyze database licensing and hosting agreements to identify opportunities to improve performance and control infrastructure costs.

  • Additional Responsibilities: Perform other duties as assigned and participate in occasional business travel, including overnight trips, of up to 10%.

  • Requirements

    • Education: Bachelor’s or Master’s degree in Computer Science, Information Systems, or a related field, supported by applicable professional experience.

    • Database Administration Experience: At least 6 years of database administration experience, including a minimum of 4 years in an enterprise SaaS environment.

    • Cloud and Relational Database Expertise: Strong experience with cloud data platforms such as AWS RDS/Aurora, Azure SQL, or Oracle Cloud Infrastructure (OCI), and relational databases including PostgreSQL, MySQL, Oracle, or SQL Server across cloud and on-premises environments.

    • NoSQL Technologies: Experience working with NoSQL databases such as Redis, Couchbase, MongoDB, or Cassandra.

    • Automation and Scripting: Advanced scripting and automation capabilities using Python, Bash, Terraform, or Ansible, with practical experience in infrastructure-as-code and automated operational workflows.

    • Migration and Upgrade Expertise: Demonstrated success managing large-scale data migrations and zero-downtime database upgrades.

    • Disaster Recovery and Reliability: Strong understanding of high availability, data replication, failover mechanisms, disaster recovery planning, and recovery objectives.

    • Incident Leadership: Ability to lead critical incident response or a technical “war room,” coordinating operations personnel and executive stakeholders during high-impact outages.

    • Distributed Team Collaboration: Experience working with geographically distributed or offshore operations teams, including follow-the-sun support models.

    • Analytical and Communication Skills: Excellent problem-solving skills, sound technical judgment, and the ability to explain complex database strategies to non-technical stakeholders.

    • Business and Cost Awareness: Ability to assess licensing and hosting agreements from both performance and cost perspectives.

    • Continuous Improvement: Willingness to responsibly explore and adopt AI tools to improve productivity, support innovation, and enhance operational effectiveness.

    • Location Eligibility: Must be located in the United States within the Eastern or Central time zone to qualify for this fully remote position.

    • Benefits

      • Base Salary: $125,000–$140,000 per year for this full-time, exempt position, excluding variable compensation. The final offer depends on factors such as experience, education, training, merit, location, and demonstrated alignment with organizational values.

      • Healthcare: Access to competitive health insurance plans.

      • Paid Time Off: Paid time off and company-paid holidays.

      • Retirement Benefits: 401(k) retirement plan with a company-selected matching contribution.

      • Additional Programs: Eligibility for other company-sponsored benefits and programs.
