Role Description
Build, maintain and improve Midships products and accelerators through hands-on software development. Work with product stakeholders and engineering colleagues to translate defined requirements into practical technical designs, tested software and maintainable product features.
As a Senior Software Engineer, you will deliver defined features under supervision and own partial product technical designs and implementation within an agreed scope. You will contribute to feature improvements, mentor Band 1 Engineers and progressively broaden your design and technical knowledge.
Key Job Responsibilities
Deliver defined product features and components under supervision, covering technical design, implementation, testing, documentation and maintenance.
Translate technical requirements into designs within your assigned scope. Explain implementation choices, identify dependencies and seek review for decisions affecting other components or the wider product.
Write clear, maintainable code and participate in code and design reviews, applying agreed engineering practices.
Develop and maintain automated tests, including unit, integration and regression tests. Validate features against agreed acceptance criteria and relevant security, performance and reliability requirements.
Investigate product defects and issues, identify root causes, implement fixes and verify that changes do not introduce regressions.
Contribute across the software development life cycle, including planning, development, release preparation and post-release improvements.
Use CI/CD tooling, scripting and automation to support repeatable builds, tests and releases. Collaborate with colleagues to validate product behaviour in cloud and container environments.
Identify opportunities to improve existing features, usability, maintainability and engineering quality using product feedback and technical findings.
Identify risks and dependencies early and escalate them with proposed solutions. Communicate progress and blockers clearly.
Maintain technical documentation, test information and relevant runbooks so that product features can be understood, maintained and supported.
Mentor Band 1 Engineers on implementation, testing and documentation, and expand your own design and technical knowledge through reviews and structured learning.
Required Technical Skills and Experience
Hands-on software development experience delivering defined features or components, including implementation, testing, debugging and maintenance.
Strong proficiency in at least one relevant programming language and the ability to write clear, maintainable code.
Ability to translate well-scoped technical requirements into designs and own partial product design and implementation with appropriate supervision.
Working knowledge of software components, APIs, integrations and data handling.
Practical experience with version control, code reviews, automated testing, technical documentation and software releases.
Understanding of secure development practices and the ability to address relevant performance, reliability and maintainability requirements within the assigned scope.
Exposure to CI/CD tooling and scripting, together with a working understanding of cloud environments, containers and deployment automation.
Ability to investigate defects systematically and validate fixes.
Previous experience developing products, accelerators or reusable software components is valuable. Exposure to IAM or CIAM is an advantage.
Personal Traits and Working Style
Takes ownership of agreed work, follows through on commitments and seeks guidance appropriately.
Identifies risks early and raises them with proposed solutions.
Communicates clearly in written and spoken English and collaborates effectively in a distributed team.
Welcomes feedback and contributes constructively to technical discussions and reviews.
Supports less experienced engineers while continuing to develop their own capabilities.
Learns quickly, adapts to change and constructively challenges existing approaches.
Organises work effectively and delivers against agreed priorities and deadlines.
Pays attention to detail and considers the quality and maintainability of the software they produce.
Typically 5 or more years of hands-on software development experience, including designing, implementing, testing and maintaining product features or software components.
