Discussion

Summary

Senior full-stack engineer building and evolving a cloud-native platform that aggregates data and services across domains, using React/TypeScript on the front end, Node.js APIs, and AWS-native services (Lambda, DynamoDB, Step Functions, etc.). Also drives architecture, CI/CD testing, observability, and mentors engineers — remote within the US at a mission-driven education nonprofit.

This position is listed on behalf of a partner company, who manages all applications and next steps. Our partner is looking for a Senior Full Stack Engineer, Platform Services based in the United States.

This is a senior-level engineering opportunity focused on building and evolving a cloud-native platform that brings together data and services from multiple domains. You’ll work across the full stack, combining modern React and TypeScript development with AWS-based backend and API architecture. The role offers significant ownership over scalable, secure, and high-performing platform capabilities. You’ll design integration patterns, improve reliability and observability, and contribute to architectural direction. Collaboration spans engineering, product, security, operations, and specialized domain teams. You’ll also mentor engineers, champion technical excellence, and help introduce emerging technologies, including AI-enabled solutions. The environment is remote-first, fast-paced, mission-driven, and focused on delivering dependable digital experiences at scale.

Accountabilities

  • Design, architect, and implement scalable full-stack solutions using React, TypeScript, Node.js, and AWS-native services.

  • Develop APIs and data integration layers that aggregate information from multiple independent backend and domain services while addressing latency, caching, partial failures, and reliability.

  • Build reusable front-end components and shared platform modules using micro-frontend or comparable architectural patterns.

  • Design and maintain cloud-native architectures using services such as Lambda, API Gateway, S3, DynamoDB, Step Functions, SQS/SNS, ECS, EC2, VPC, IAM, and CloudWatch.

  • Define architectural patterns, API contracts, automation practices, observability standards, and technical approaches that support scalability, security, and operational resilience.

  • Lead technical solutioning, feature evaluation, estimation, sprint planning, peer reviews, and design discussions.

  • Develop and maintain automated end-to-end and UI testing frameworks, including Playwright, and integrate testing into CI/CD workflows.

  • Drive application and platform performance improvements across API integration, rendering, caching, and cloud infrastructure layers.

  • Monitor system health and reliability while supporting testing, operational readiness, incident response, and production stability.

  • Mentor engineers and promote strong practices in secure development, testing, system design, automation, performance, and resilient engineering.

  • Collaborate with product, operations, security, QA, and domain teams to deliver cohesive solutions and maintain a consistent user experience.

  • Lead documentation, knowledge sharing, continuous improvement, and cross-functional technical communication.

  • Requirements

    • 5+ years of experience designing, building, and supporting scalable cloud-native full-stack applications.

    • 3+ years of hands-on experience developing modern front-end applications with React and TypeScript.

    • Strong backend development experience with Node.js, preferably using TypeScript, including API development and data integration.

    • Deep practical knowledge of AWS services including Lambda, API Gateway, SNS, SQS, S3, Step Functions, EC2, ECS, VPC, IAM, CloudWatch, and DynamoDB.

    • Experience with distributed cloud infrastructure, microservices architecture, and systems that aggregate data and content from multiple backend services into a unified user interface.

    • Experience with Infrastructure as Code, particularly AWS CDK or CloudFormation.

    • Hands-on experience with Backstage and GitHub Actions.

    • Strong knowledge of React, TypeScript, HTML, and CSS, with experience creating responsive, secure, accessible, and high-performance user interfaces.

    • Familiarity with micro-frontend architectures such as Module Federation and shared shell/component patterns.

    • Experience with automated end-to-end and UI testing frameworks and integrating testing into CI/CD pipelines.

    • Strong understanding of scalability, data integrity, reliability, security, observability, and quality engineering practices.

    • Excellent communication and collaboration skills, including the ability to explain technical concepts and tradeoffs to both technical and business audiences.

    • Demonstrated ability to mentor engineers, prioritize work, and lead execution in a fast-paced environment.

    • Authorization to work in the United States for any employer.

    • Curiosity about emerging technologies, willingness to experiment with AI-driven solutions, and ability to learn new digital tools independently.

    • A collaborative, empathetic, growth-oriented approach with a strong focus on impact, continuous improvement, and user needs.

    • Nice-to-have experience includes Grafana or CloudWatch dashboards, real-time stream processing such as Apache Flink, ML/AI lifecycle concepts, AI-driven platform features, and secure data isolation or performance segmentation in distributed systems.

    • Benefits

      • Competitive hiring range of $153,000–$166,000, with exact compensation determined by location, experience, qualifications, and internal equity.

      • Remote-first work environment, with hybrid flexibility available near designated offices.

      • Annual bonuses and opportunities for merit-based salary increases and promotions.

      • Comprehensive benefits designed to support employees' health, development, and overall well-being.

      • Opportunity to work on high-impact, cloud-native technology serving millions of learners and education stakeholders.

      • Meaningful career growth within a mission-driven, nonprofit environment.

      • A collaborative team that invests in employee development, recognition, and long-term success.

      • Opportunities to work with emerging cloud, AI, automation, and software engineering technologies.

      • Occasional travel for in-person business meetings and team collaboration.
