Why This Role Matters
The Sr. Manager, Engineering is the senior engineering leader accountable for the people, technology, delivery, and release quality capabilities supporting an assigned product portfolio within Mars Veterinary Health. This role leads Application Engineers and Release Quality Managers, directs dedicated vendor engineering capacity, and establishes the operating model, technical direction, and delivery accountability required to execute the product strategy. Reporting to the Director, Growth and Clinical Product Engineering, this role is responsible for aligning engineering capacity, architecture, quality, and execution across associate and vendor resources.
This role combines people leadership, technical strategy, and portfolio delivery accountability. It builds leadership capability and succession depth within the engineering team, establishes standards and governance across associate and vendor-delivered work, and partners with, product, architecture, and business leaders to translate product priorities into executable technology plans and measurable outcomes.
You Will
People Leadership and Team Management:
- Lead, coach, and develop Application Engineers and Release Quality Managers, including hiring, performance management, career development, and workload and capacity planning.
- Conduct performance reviews, compensation recommendations, goal setting and associate support.
- Build and maintain an engineering capacity plan that aligns capabilities and vendor capacity with product roadmap demand.
Vendor Technical Oversight and Delivery Quality:
- Set technical direction, quality standards, and delivery expectations for dedicated vendor application engineers supporting the pillar.
- Coordinate staffing, onboarding, and offboarding of vendor engineers with the vendor's account or delivery management.
- Work with Application Engineers and Release Quality Managers for technical review and acceptance of delivered work within their respective areas.
Delivery Planning and Architecture Alignment:
- Partner with product leadership and peer pillar leads translating roadmap priorities into a delivery plan.
- Ensure feature delivery aligns with the pillar's architecture vision and technical roadmap, and that release quality practices - testing, deployment, hypercare - are integrated into delivery planning rather than bolted on after the fact.
- Represent Product Engineering performance, delivery health, technical strategy, and investment needs for assigned product portfolio to the Director, Growth and Clinical Product Engineering and other senior stakeholders. Proactively surface systemic risks, resolve cross-team blockers, and recommend changes to priorities, capacity, or operating practices.
Continuous Improvement and Process Ownership:
- Own continuous improvement of the pillar's delivery practices, including technical standards, review processes, and the engagement model itself.
- Identify and address technical debt, delivery bottlenecks, and quality trends across engineering work.
- Partner with engineering leaders across the Growth and Clinical product portfolios to align technical standards, operating practices, shared capabilities, and resource strategies while preserving clear accountability for assigned Product Engineering outcomes.
- Live and exemplify the Five Principles of Mars, Inc. within self and team.
- Other job duties as assigned.
Your Experience Should Include
- Bachelor's degree in Computer Science, Software Engineering, Information Systems, or related technical experience required.
- Master's degree in Computer Science, Engineering, or a related technical discipline preferred.
- 8+ years of professional software engineering experience, including 4+ years in formal people-management and engineering-leadership roles with accountability for multiple teams, technical delivery, and organizational outcomes.
- Demonstrated experience leading blended employee and vendor engineering organizations and partnering with senior product and business leaders.
- Working knowledge of C#/.NET and TypeScript/Angular sufficient to evaluate technical designs and delivery quality. Azure application services (AKS, APIM, Key Vault, SQL MI). Azure DevOps or equivalent CI/CD and work tracking. Git-based source control and pull request review.
- Preferred: Experience leading multiple engineering teams or functional leaders within a blended delivery organization.
- Preferred: Experience designing and scaling vendor engagement models across engineering disciplines.
- Preferred: Experience supporting clinical digital products, care-delivery workflows, or other measurable clinical and operational outcomes in a regulated or multi-business-unit enterprise environment.
- Preferred: Datadog and/or Elastic for application monitoring and log investigation. GitHub Advanced Security findings (code scanning, secret scanning, dependency alerts). Python or PowerShell for scripting and automation. Atlassian tooling (Jira, Confluence)
