Sr. Manager, System Design Engineering
Shenzhen, China

THE ROLE

AMD is seeking a Sr. Manager of System Design Engineering to lead innovative AI PC development from concept definition to solution enable/qualify with partners, and drive customer pick-and-go solutions.

Based in Shenzhen, this role will build the Client and Graphics System Engineering (CGSE) team and lab from the ground up, and lead its daily operations. You will work closely with ODM/OEM partners, component suppliers, and AMD system engineering teams to drive platform innovation, component enablement, and compatibility verification. The successful candidate will serve as the key technical bridge between AMD Shanghai System Engineering teams and Shenzhen ecosystem partners, enabling effective collaboration throughout the product development lifecycle.

THE PERSON

The ideal candidate is an experienced engineering leader with strong technical expertise in PC product development, ecosystem technologies, and product qualification before mass production. You thrive in a fast-paced environment, have an excellent sense of market technology trends, enjoy solving complex problems, and have a proven ability to lead cross-functional teams and influence engineering decisions across organizations. You advocate AMD's execution culture, hold the team accountable for deliverables, and can convey status and vision clearly to executives.

KEY RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Build the CGSE team and lab in Shenzhen from scratch, including validation infrastructure and engineering best practices.
  • Serve as the key technical bridge between AMD Shanghai Engineering teams and Shenzhen partners; align with the global team on development strategy, training plan, execution culture, and priority calls.
  • Leverage close engagement with ODM/OEM partners and ecosystem suppliers to accelerate platform development, technology adoption, issue resolution, and parts qualification — enabling comprehensive PC components from China partners, including memory, storage, Wi-Fi, USB re-timer, EC, display, audio, sensors, and VR solutions.
  • Drive cross-functional technical discussions, risk assessment, root-cause analysis, and debug closure across hardware, firmware, validation, and operations teams.
  • Conduct design reviews covering architecture, schematic, layout, integration, and platform readiness.
  • Facilitate workshops and technical trainings with Shenzhen partners.
  • Develop and maintain positive relationships with key Shenzhen stakeholders (HR, IT, facility) to ensure effective team operation.
  • Mentor engineers, develop technical leaders, and foster a culture of technical excellence, collaboration, and innovation.

REQUESTED EXPERIENCE

  • Bachelor's degree or above in Electrical Engineering, Computer Science, Computer Engineering, or a related field. Master's preferred.
  • 15+ years of experience in PC/notebook hardware design and development, with 10+ years in management.
  • Proven track record of leading cross-functional engineering teams and delivering products from concept through volume production.
  • Strong technical breadth and depth, with expertise in memory sub-system validation, system-level validation, motherboard design, or low-power system design.
  • Strong understanding of PC/notebook system architecture, motherboard design, power delivery, SI/PI, EMC, thermal/mechanical, and RF.
  • Deep technical understanding of key laptop components, including display panels, cameras, audio, wireless modules, batteries, storage devices, sensors, and peripheral interfaces.
  • Experience with platform bring-up, debugging, validation, and ODM/OEM collaboration.
  • Experience working across geographically distributed engineering teams.
  • Strong verbal and written communication skills in both English and Chinese.

PREFERRED EXPERIENCE

  • Leadership working experience in top-tier PC companies.
  • Established relationships with component suppliers and a track record of influencing supplier technology roadmaps.
  • Experience in engineering management or leading technical project teams of significant scale.
  • Out-of-the-box thinking; ability to leverage AI to improve team productivity and problem-solving.
