Ashland Conveyor Products Sr. Mechanical Design Engineer
We are seeking a motivated Senior Mechanical Design Engineer to join our growing team. In this role, you will independently develop industrial products and equipment from concept through production. This hands-on role owns complex assignments, makes sound technical decisions, supports prototypes and testing, and delivers complete production-ready documentation. Direct conveyor experience is helpful, but it is not required.
- Lead mechanical design projects from concept through production release.
- Develop concepts, calculations, prototypes, test equipment, and production-ready designs.
- Create accurate 3D models, assemblies, drawings, tolerance schemes, and bills of material.
- Apply engineering judgment to performance, capacity, safety, reliability, cost, manufacturability, and serviceability.
- Develop test plans, lead validation, document results, and resolve identified risks.
- Investigate failures, production concerns, and field issues and lead corrective action through completion.
- Integrate motors, sensors, wiring, controls, guarding, and safety devices with electrical and controls engineering.
- Work directly with manufacturing, purchasing, quality, suppliers, sales, and customers.
- Develop modular product platforms, reusable components, standards, and design guidelines.
- Mentor junior engineers and designers and contribute to formal design reviews.
- Keep leadership informed of status, risks, decisions, and resource needs.
- Work closely with sales and manufacturing teams to address complex customer needs, custom configurations, and integration of communication and control modules; actively participate in process improvement.
- Make technical decisions within assigned project requirements.
- Recommend product architecture, materials, components, testing, and manufacturing methods.
- Request design reviews and stop assigned work when safety or technical requirements remain unresolved.
- Perform other duties as assigned.
Qualifications and Education Requirements
- Bachelor's degree in Mechanical Engineering, Mechanical Engineering Technology, or a related field. Equivalent hands-on experience will receive consideration.
- Seven or more years of mechanical design or product-development experience.
- Experience designing machinery, industrial equipment, automation, fabricated products, mobile equipment, or similar systems.
- Advanced 3D CAD skills. SolidWorks experience is preferred.
- Strong manufacturing knowledge across fabrication, machining, sheet metal, welding, fasteners, bearings, shafts, motors, and power transmission.
- Experience with calculations, production drawings, tolerancing, bills of material, prototyping, and validation.
- Proven ability to manage multiple priorities with limited supervision.
- Experience with machine safety, risk assessment, PDM, ERP, configurable products, design for manufacturing, and value engineering preferred
- Material-handling or conveyor experience is helpful but not required.
