Sr. Mobile (iOS & Android) Engineer - Night Shift

Posted Updated
Discussion
The Sr. Mobile Engineer is a senior individual contributor role responsible for implementing mobile solutions that are robust, scalable, reusable and maintainable. The role is Kotlin-first and built on Jetpack Compose, with a strong grounding in Android architecture components, and includes maintaining and modernising legacy Java code as the estate transitions to current frameworks and languages. Working within an Agile product team, the role owns complex Android functionality end to end, from architecture and implementation through automated testing, release and production support. This role exists to ensure the Institute's mobile channel is dependable, performant and able to evolve at the pace the business requires.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES & RESPONSIBILITIES

Android Application Development

· Design, build and maintain Android application features using Kotlin and Jetpack Compose.

· Implement asynchronous behaviour using Kotlin Coroutines and Flow, with correct lifecycle and state handling.

· Connect Android applications to back-end services through RESTful APIs.

· Apply Material Design principles and responsive UI architecture to deliver high-quality user experiences.

Architecture, Code Quality and Modernisation

· Support the architecture, testing and deployment of Android applications.

· Create and maintain coding standards, architectural guidelines and reusable components to ensure consistency and maintainability.

· Maintain and refactor legacy Java code as needed, migrating to Kotlin where appropriate.

· Promote the adoption of modern Android engineering practices, including architecture components, coroutines and declarative UI.

Test Automation and Release Engineering

· Write thorough unit, integration and end-to-end tests using JUnit, Espresso and Jetpack Test libraries.

· Contribute to CI/CD pipelines and automation strategies using tools such as GitHub Actions, Bitrise or Jenkins.

· Support Play Store deployment and release management, including staged rollout and release verification.

Troubleshooting, Performance and Support

· Investigate and resolve complex Android functionality problems, providing advanced troubleshooting and support.

· Review support requests and identify opportunities to prevent recurring issues.

· Analyse and improve application performance, including multi-threading, memory management and network communication on Android devices.

Continuous Improvement and AI-Assisted Engineering

· Periodically evaluate systems for improvements, recommending refactors, automation and tools that enhance performance and developer productivity.

· Incorporate AI-assisted development tooling, such as GitHub Copilot, Claude Code or Cursor, into day-to-day workflow and the wider SDLC.

Agile Participation, Project and Vendor Support

· Participate in Agile ceremonies, including daily stand-ups, sprint planning, reviews and retrospectives.

· May lead small projects, and may assist in managing an outsourced relationship for third-party application and programming consultants.

JOB COMPETENCIES

· Technical expertise: Proficient in Kotlin, Jetpack Compose and modern Android UI architecture, with a solid grasp of app architecture, lifecycle management and state handling.

· Analytical and debugging: Strong analytical and debugging skills; able to isolate performance, memory and concurrency defects that do not reproduce reliably.

· Quality orientation: Holds high standards for code quality, design and architecture; writes well-designed, testable and efficient code that meets technical requirements.

· Complexity: Demonstrates an intermediate level of understanding of the full mobile life cycle and the secure software development life cycle (S-SDLC), and works comfortably across its stages.

· Independence and autonomy: Operates with limited supervision on complex features, and escalates with a recommendation rather than an open question.

· Collaboration: Partners effectively with product, design, back-end engineering and QA, including across time zones and sites.

· Communication: Communicates clearly in writing and verbally with distributed colleagues, including asynchronously where working hours do not overlap.

· Accountability: Owns features through to production and remains accountable for their post-release stability.

· Mentoring and coaching: Shares practice, reviews the work of others constructively, and may guide junior engineers and third-party consultants.

· User focus: Performs with, and fosters, a passion for creating great user experiences.

· Adaptability and continuous learning: Adopts new frameworks and tooling, including AI-assisted development tools, and integrates them into the workflow.

· Time management: Manages concurrent feature, defect and release workstreams against competing priorities.

· Demonstrated proficiency in Jetpack Compose, Kotlin Coroutines and Flow, and Android architecture components, with a solid grasp of lifecycle and state management. (Required)

· Familiarity with dependency injection frameworks such as Hilt or Dagger, and demonstrated understanding of multi-threading, memory management and network communication on Android devices. (Required)

· Experience working with and modernising legacy Java codebases. (Required)

· Experience with automated testing using JUnit, Espresso and Jetpack Test libraries; proficiency in Git and Agile practices such as Scrum and Extreme Programming. (Required)

· Well-versed in the Android release cycle, CI/CD platforms and pipelines, and Play Store deployment and release management. (Required)

· Familiarity with AI-assisted tools such as GitHub Copilot, Claude Code or Cursor, and experience incorporating AI tooling into the SDLC; experience with Kotlin Multiplatform Mobile, Compose Multiplatform or other cross-platform tooling. (Preferred)
