What's the role?

As a Principal Privacy Architect, you will help build and scale the technical capabilities behind HERE’s privacy program.

This role combines hands-on software engineering with Privacy by Design ownership and technical advisory responsibilities. You will develop privacy tooling, integrate new systems into our Data Subject Rights capabilities, contribute to privacy assessments and architecture reviews, and translate privacy requirements into practical engineering solutions.

You will work across engineering and legal or privacy contexts, helping technical and non-technical stakeholders understand one another and make informed decisions about the use and protection of personal data.

Your main responsibilities include:

  • Automation of Privacy Management: Design and deliver tooling, infrastructure and workflows that automate and scale HERE’s core privacy operations. This includes Data Protection Impact Assessments, Records of Processing Activities, Data Subject Rights, privacy assessments, consent management, retention controls and evidence collection. Develop solutions that reduce manual effort, improve auditability and support continuous compliance assurance.

  • Privacy by Design Ownership: Evolve and operate HERE’s Privacy by Design framework end to end, including privacy threshold assessments, DPIA methodology, privacy requirements engineering and privacy review governance. Improve how stakeholders interact with these processes, automate manual activities and embed privacy requirements from the earliest stages of the product development lifecycle.

  • Technical Privacy Advisor: Act as a technical advisor to Product, Engineering, Architecture and Security teams on Privacy by Design implementation. Help define engineering patterns, reference architectures and technical standards for privacy controls, supporting consistent implementation across HERE’s products, services and platforms.

  • Enhance Data Subject Rights tooling by integrating new systems and improving the discovery, combination, access and deletion of data across HERE.

  • Participate in privacy assessments and privacy architecture reviews, advising teams on data collection, data minimization, anonymization, retention and deletion.

  • Improve privacy-related processes and tooling, including deletion workflows, retention practices, cookie policies, cookie scanners and compliance automation.

  • Support the privacy aspects of incidents involving personal data, including technical assessment activities and obligations related to regulatory reporting requirements.

  • Mentor junior engineers and contribute to the continued development of the team’s privacy engineering practices.

Who are you?

You are an experienced software engineer with meaningful involvement in privacy-related work in a current or previous role. You enjoy working at the intersection of software, data and privacy and can communicate effectively with engineers, architects, privacy professionals and lawyers.

To be successful in this role, you bring:

  • A degree in Computer Science, Mathematics or another relevant technical field, or equivalent practical experience.

  • Strong software engineering experience, including backend development with programming languages such as Python or Java.

  • Experience contributing to privacy engineering, data protection, data governance or compliance-related technical initiatives.

  • Practical experience applying Privacy by Design principles and translating privacy requirements into technical designs, controls and implementation plans.

  • Experience building, maintaining or integrating software services, RESTful APIs, automation tooling and cloud-based systems.

  • Knowledge of privacy concepts such as personal data handling, data minimization, anonymization, consent management, retention, deletion and Data Subject Rights.

  • Familiarity with GDPR and experience contributing to privacy assessments, security reviews or architecture reviews.

  • Experience with CI/CD pipelines and modern software development practices.

  • Strong communication skills and the ability to collaborate across engineering and legal or privacy contexts.

  • The ability to work independently, contribute to complex technical initiatives and mentor junior engineers.

Privacy certifications such as CIPP/E, CIPT or CDPSE are a strong advantage but are not required. Experience with geospatial, location, mobility or automotive data would also be beneficial. Experience addressing varied privacy use cases within a larger organization is considered an advantage but is not essential.

What Do We Offer?

  • The opportunity to work on meaningful and technically challenging privacy problems.

  • Work with real-world impact, helping shape how privacy is embedded into location technology and mobility products.

  • Collaboration with engineering, product, architecture, security, privacy and legal professionals.

  • Opportunities to continue developing your software engineering and privacy expertise.

  • Regular feedback to help you grow and succeed in your role.

  • A collaborative and supportive team environment where your contributions are valued.

  • Flexible working hours and a hybrid working environment.
