Product Engineering is a unified team responsible for the engineering of Disney Entertainment & ESPN digital and streaming products and platforms. This includes product engineering, media engineering, quality assurance, engineering behind personalization, commerce, lifecycle, and identity.
Job Summary:

As a Senior Software Engineer on the Shared Services team within News & Entertainment Engineering, you will build and maintain the shared backend services and APIs that deliver content experiences across Disney’s portfolio of brands — including GraphQL federation gateways, content delivery APIs, layout services, and headless CMS platforms. This role is intended for an experienced engineer who takes ownership of shared platform services, makes sound technical decisions, and delivers reliable, scalable solutions for shared platform services consumed by multiple product teams across News & Entertainment. You will be 100% hands-on with development, delivering quickly and iteratively in an agile environment.
Responsibilities and Duties of the Role:
- Design and implement shared platform services including API gateways, content delivery layers, and CMS platforms that deliver high-throughput content experiences to consumer-facing products
- Collaborate with cross-functional teams to troubleshoot and resolve complex issues across shared services and APIs. Monitor and improve service performance, scalability, and reliability for multi-tenant platform consumers
- Contribute to and lead cross-team architecture discussions with product teams that consume shared services. Enforce development best practices, conduct code reviews, and ensure API contracts and design specifications are met
- Research, learn, and evangelize widespread adoption of new technologies and architecture patterns. Influence and contribute to department technical strategy and planning.
Required Education, Experience/Skills/Training:
Minimum and Preferred. Inclusive of Licenses/Certs (include functional experience as well as behavioral attributes and/or leadership capabilities)
Basic Qualifications
- 5+ years of relevant industry experience as a software engineer
- Excellent programming skills and strong knowledge of the Java platform and Java web applications and frameworks (Spring/Tomcat/etc)
- Deep understanding of web architecture including HTTP, caching, and API delivery paradigms (REST, GraphQL, Federation)
- Strong understanding of both relational and NoSQL persistence stores and the ability to determine which is the right tool for the job
- Hands-on experience developing cloud-based services on Amazon Web Services
- Experience with the full software development lifecycle and common best practices like unit testing, collaborative version control flows, and continuous integration
- Strong analytical skills and the ability to resolve a wide range of issues in innovative ways
Preferred Qualifications
- Experience building and operating GraphQL federation gateways, content delivery APIs, or headless CMS platforms serving multiple downstream consumers
- Proven experience developing, monitoring, and maintaining high-volume and highly available distributed systems
- Experience with real-time messaging frameworks such as Kafka or AWS messaging services
- Hands-on experience performing DevOps duties and developing infrastructure as code (Jenkins, TeamCity, AWS CloudFormation, Terraform, Kubernetes)
- Effective use of AI‑assisted developer tools (e.g., Claude Code, Cursor) to improve code quality, development velocity, and maintainability
- Ability to communicate technical concepts effectively, both in writing and orally
Required Education
- Bachelor’s degree in Computer Science or a related technical discipline, or equivalent practical experience
