Product Engineering is a unified team responsible for the engineering of Disney Entertainment & ESPN digital and streaming products and platforms. This includes product engineering, media engineering, quality assurance, engineering behind personalization, commerce, lifecycle, and identity.
Job Summary:
As a Senior Software Engineer on the News & Entertainment Engineering team, you will own and evolve key backend systems that power content delivery across our digital ecosystem, including Disney.com, StarWars.com, and more than 100 domestic and international sites. This role is intended for an experienced engineer who takes accountability for system health, makes sound technical decisions, and partners closely with peers to deliver reliable, scalable solutions.
This role focuses on highly available, consumer-facing applications. While many existing systems are built with Ruby on Rails and MongoDB running in Google Cloud Platform, the team is actively evolving toward Java-based services. We are specifically looking for senior-level engineers who are strong in Java, comfortable operating in mixed-language environments, and capable of guiding the incremental modernization of mature Rails-based systems.
Responsibilities and Duties of the Role:
- Participate in the design and implementation of multi-layered systems delivering high throughput consumer facing experiences
- Collaborate & troubleshoot with the rest of the team in the analysis and resolution of hard engineering problems involving high trafficked web application services and APIs. Oversee service performance, scalability, and event planning requirements
- Contribute to and lead cross-team architecture discussions. Provide mentorship and guidance to team members, enforce development best practices, and review code to ensure product and design specifications are met
- Research, learn, and evangelize widespread adoption of new technologies and architecture patterns. Influence and contribute to department technical strategy and planning.
Required Education, Experience/Skills/Training:
Basic Qualifications
- 5+ years of relevant industry experience as a software engineer
- Strong experience designing, building, and operating backend services using Java in production environments
- Demonstrated ability to own services end to end, including reliability, performance, and maintainability
- Experience working across the full application development lifecycle, including testing, code reviews, and operational support
- Ability to work independently, make sound technical decisions, and balance short-term delivery with long-term quality
- Strong analytical, debugging, and troubleshooting skills
- Strong communication skills and attention to detail
Preferred Qualifications
- Professional experience working with Ruby on Rails applications
- Experience modernizing or migrating systems from Ruby or other dynamic languages to Java-based services
- Experience with cloud platforms such as Google Cloud Platform and/or AWS
- Familiarity with infrastructure-as-code tools such as Terraform
- Effective use of AI‑assisted developer tools (e.g., Claude Code, Cursor) to improve code quality, development velocity, and maintainability
Experience With
- Java and open-source frameworks (e.g., Spring)
- Ruby on Rails–based applications
- Datastores such as MongoDB and/or MySQL
- Content and asset management systems
- REST and/or GraphQL APIs
Required Education
- Bachelor’s degree in Computer Science or a related technical discipline, or equivalent practical experience
