Sr. Project Manager
Summary
Leads large-scale healthcare IT integrations and migrations, coordinating cross-functional teams to deliver complex system implementations and operational transitions.
The Senior Project Manager leads complex, high-visibility technology integration initiatives across multiple business and IT functions within Sentara Health. This role is responsible for delivering large-scale system implementations and migrations – including core platform integrations, vendor connectivity, and operational transitions – within a highly matrixed environment.
Successful candidates must be comfortable operating in ambiguity and capable of driving progress in situations where processes, requirements, or solutions are still evolving. This role requires a strong leader who can bring structure to complexity, maintain momentum across cross-functional teams, and guide stakeholders toward decisions while navigating competing priorities.
The Senior Project Manager partners closely with business leaders, IT teams, and vendor partners to ensure alignment across workstreams and successful delivery of program objectives. This position operates in a fast-paced environment where initiative, resilience, and sound judgment are essential.
Key Responsibilities
Program & Project Leadership
- Lead large, complex system integration initiatives across business and technology domains including platform implementations, data migrations, vendor integrations, and operational transitions.
- Develop and manage integrated project plans, milestones, and delivery schedules aligned to program objectives.
- Drive execution across multiple workstreams while ensuring alignment on dependencies, priorities, and timelines.
Operating in Ambiguity
- Effectively operate in environments where requirements, processes, or solutions may still be evolving.
- Bring structure, clarity, and forward momentum to complex initiatives with competing priorities and incomplete information.
- Facilitate decision-making and guide stakeholders toward practical solutions that maintain delivery progress.
Cross-Functional Coordination
- Drive collaboration across Operations, IT, Product, Finance, Provider Network, Enrollment, Claims, Customer Service, and external vendor partners.
- Coordinate across multiple stakeholder groups to ensure alignment on deliverables and critical dependencies.
- Lead project meetings, working sessions, and governance forums to maintain program momentum.
Stakeholder Engagement
- Serve as the primary point of coordination between business leaders, technology teams, and vendor partners.
- Build strong relationships across leadership levels to drive accountability and transparency.
- Communicate project status, risks, and key decisions clearly to program leadership and executive stakeholders.
Risk & Issue Management
- Proactively identify and manage project risks, issues, and dependencies through formal governance processes.
- Drive mitigation strategies and facilitate resolution of complex cross-team issues.
- Escalate risks appropriately to maintain timeline and delivery integrity.
Governance & Reporting
- Maintain governance artifacts including integrated schedules, RAID logs, status reports, and executive summaries.
- Provide regular reporting on project health, milestone progress, and delivery risks.
- Ensure adherence to organizational project management standards and governance practices.
Operational Readiness & Delivery
- Partner with operational leaders to support testing coordination, business readiness, and transition planning.
- Ensure alignment between technology delivery and operational implementation.
- Support end-to-end delivery through stabilization and operational handoff.
Leadership & Mentorship
- Mentor junior project managers and contribute to the development of PMO best practices.
- Support continuous improvement initiatives that strengthen project delivery capabilities across the organization.
Required Qualifications
- Health Plan industry experience required, with familiarity across core operational areas (claims, enrollment, billing, provider, customer service).
- 6+ years of project management experience with demonstrated success delivering large, complex initiatives.
- Proven experience supporting large-scale system integrations or enterprise platform implementations.
- Demonstrated ability to lead cross-functional teams and manage multiple stakeholder relationships in a matrixed environment.
- Ability to operate effectively in ambiguous or evolving environments while maintaining forward momentum.
- Residency in an approved Sentara state.
Preferred Experience
- Experience with core health plan platforms (e.g., QNXT, Facets, HealthRules, or similar).
- Experience with data migration, vendor integrations, or enterprise transformation programs.
- Familiarity with hybrid delivery models combining waterfall governance and agile execution.
- Experience working in startup or high-growth environments where processes and structures are rapidly evolving.
- PMP Certification preferred.
