Sr. Safety Specialist (P3, 3rd shift)

Job Description: The Senior Safety Specialist is responsible for developing, implementing, and maintaining safety programs that promote a culture of safety, reduce workplace injuries, ensure regulatory compliance, and support operational excellence. This role partners with operations leadership, employees, HR, and external stakeholders to identify risks, investigate incidents, and drive continuous improvement in safety performance.

Key Responsibilities

  1. Safety Program Management
  • Implement and maintain corporate safety policies, standards, and procedures.
  • Conduct routine facility inspections, audits, and risk assessments.
  • Lead safety initiatives focused on injury prevention and hazard reduction.
  • Monitor compliance with OSHA, DOT, EPA, and company requirements.
  • Support annual safety planning and goal development.

  1. Incident Management
  • Lead investigations of injuries, near misses, vehicle incidents, and property damage events.
  • Determine root causes and implement corrective and preventive actions.
  • Track and trend incident data to identify recurring risks.
  • Prepare detailed incident reports and executive summaries.

  1. Regulatory Compliance
  • Ensure compliance with federal, state, and local safety regulations.
  • Maintain required safety records and documentation.
  • Coordinate regulatory inspections and audits.
  • Stay current on regulatory changes affecting operations.
  • Coordinate with vendors and management for annual audiometric testing and noise surveys as needed.

  1. Training and Employee Engagement
  • Deliver safety orientation and recurrent training programs.
  • Coach leaders and employees on safe work practices.
  • Facilitate safety committees and safety meetings.
  • Promote employee engagement through safety campaigns and recognition programs.

  1. Return-to-Work and Workers' Compensation
  • Support injury case management and return-to-work programs.
  • Coordinate work hardening and transitional duty programs.
  • Review injury trends and develop strategies to reduce workers' compensation costs.
  • Partner with HR and medical providers to support employee recovery.

  1. Risk Assessment and Continuous Improvement
  • Conduct Job Hazard Analyses (JHAs) and ergonomic assessments.
  • Evaluate operational changes for safety impacts.
  • Recommend engineering, administrative, and behavioral controls.
  • Develop and track safety KPIs and corrective action plans.

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities

  • Valid Drivers’ License
  • Ability to obtain and maintain airport SIDA badge.
  • Strong understanding of OSHA regulations and safety management systems.
  • Knowledge of workers' compensation and return-to-work programs.
  • Experience with root cause analysis methodologies.
  • Strong data analysis and reporting skills.
  • Excellent communication, presentation, and coaching abilities.
  • Ability to influence leaders and employees at all organizational levels.
  • Proficiency with Microsoft Office Suite and safety management systems.

  • Ability to communicate effectively verbally and in writing.

  • Ability to prepare reports, presentations, and regulatory documentation.
  • Ability to handle multiple priorities in a fast-paced operational environment.

Work Environment

  • Office environment (up to 40% of the time).
  • Warehouse and distribution facilities (up to 30% of the time).
  • Airport aprons/ramps, transportation yards and loading docks (up to 30% of the time).
  • Exposure to varying temperatures, noise levels, moving equipment, and industrial operations while conducting safety activities.
