Responsibilities

  • Deliver complete solutions spanning all phases of the Software Development Lifecycle (SDLC) – design, implementation, testing, delivery, and operations – based on definitions from more senior roles.
  • Advise immediate management on project‑level issues.
  • Guide junior engineers.
  • Operate with little day‑to‑day supervision, making technical decisions based on knowledge of internal conventions and industry best practices.
  • Apply knowledge of technical best practices in making decisions.

What You Will Do

  • Lead engineering efforts and team‑level processes by defining outcomes for others, refining ongoing processes, and providing technical advice to senior leaders on systems, solutions, challenges, and strategy.
  • Evangelist for technical standards, engineering best practices, and quality across the larger Venmo and PayPal teams.
  • Determine the technical tasks that other engineers will follow.
  • Support end‑to‑end ownership of design, implementation, and operational excellence of software components while proactively improving existing structures and processes.
  • Contribute to the technical engineering roadmap by completing quality and thorough assessments of implementation alternatives and their associated tradeoffs, and providing recommendations.
  • Be consistently solutions‑focused while contributing to the vision of domain and larger Venmo & PayPal technical engineering roadmap.
  • Exercise judgement in reconciling diverse and competing priorities to identify optimal solutions to problems.
  • Leverage strategic thinking to anticipate consequences and risks linked to implementation choices, identify patterns to reduce repetition, and produce meaningful general solutions.
  • Serve as an expert to resolve technical inquiries of others.
  • Provide technical leadership for a team with limited guidance from management or senior teammates.
  • Interact and tailor communication with various technical and non‑technical stakeholders, such as product, support, finance operations, compliance, and legal.

Qualifications

  • Minimum 3+ years of relevant experience and a Bachelor’s degree or equivalent combination of education and experience.
  • 8+ years of experience in Mobile Development, specifically developing and maintaining consumer‑facing mobile applications at scale.
  • Strong Kotlin skills and knowledge of multi‑threaded, asynchronous code.
  • Deep understanding of consuming GraphQL and REST APIs from mobile applications.
  • Passionate about mentoring and developing software engineers.
  • Ability to understand and discuss complex topics with technical and non‑technical audiences.
  • Strong understanding of testing best practices and familiarity with at least one testing framework for mobile development; skilled at writing unit and automation tests.
  • Strong knowledge of common design patterns, algorithms, and object‑oriented programming with expertise in MVC and MVVM.

Compensation

Base pay varies by location: San Jose, CA ($143,500.00 – $212,850.00 annually); Austin, TX ($130,500.00 – $193,600.00 annually). Additional compensation may include an annual performance bonus, equity, or other incentive compensation as applicable.
