- Set the technical strategy for a major product domain, guiding architecture, engineering standards, and the delivery of complex initiatives involving multiple teams.
- Design dependable distributed systems using event-driven and cloud-native patterns that support long-term product growth.
- Establish practical standards for distributed tracing, structured logging, service-level objectives, alerting, and production reliability.
- Lead collaborative technical design reviews and document important architectural decisions so teams can move forward with clarity.
- Identify recurring engineering challenges and create system-level solutions that improve productivity across the wider organization.
- Partner with product and data science colleagues to turn business needs into thoughtful, scalable technical designs.
- Define meaningful measures of engineering quality, including test coverage, deployment performance, incident trends, and recovery effectiveness.
- Own critical systems throughout their lifecycle and participate in on-call support when required.
- Mentor engineers in system design, software quality, domain ownership, and the responsible use of artificial intelligence tools.
- Establish clear safeguards for artificial intelligence-assisted development, including validation checkpoints, review expectations, and appropriate limits for autonomous agents.
- Evaluate emerging development tools and guide adoption when they offer genuine value to engineers, partners, and the business.
- Use artificial intelligence to explore design options, assess trade-offs, support complex refactoring, strengthen testing, and produce clear technical documentation.

- Expert proficiency in Python and TypeScript, supported by deep knowledge of a significant product or technical domain.
- Proven ability to define architecture, establish engineering standards, and guide important technical decisions without waiting for problems to escalate.
- Considerable expertise in distributed system design, including event sourcing, command query responsibility segregation, microservices, and service mesh patterns.
- Extensive experience with Amazon Web Services, Kubernetes, cloud-native infrastructure, and platform reliability engineering.
- A systems-first mindset, with the ability to replace recurring fixes with durable solutions that eliminate whole categories of problems.
- Demonstrated success leading platform, infrastructure, developer experience, or engineering productivity initiatives.
- The ability to connect technical decisions with the business problem, customer need, and complete system lifecycle.
- Proven experience mentoring engineers and helping teams improve their technical judgement, documentation, and delivery practices.
- Advanced capability with artificial intelligence coding tools for complex analysis, multi-file change, automated test generation, and large-scale refactoring.
- Sound judgement about the capabilities and limitations of artificial intelligence, including when human review must remain non-negotiable.
- A responsible approach to data classification, privacy, bias mitigation, fairness, transparency, and validation of artificial intelligence-generated output.
- Experience creating clear technical proposals and architectural decision records that allow teams to understand context, options, and trade-offs.
- A bachelor’s degree in Computer Science or a related discipline, or equivalent practical experience. Postgraduate study may be valuable for research-adjacent work but is not essential.
- A collaborative approach grounded in curiosity, ownership, candid feedback, continuous learning, and respect for diverse perspectives.
- The ability to maintain adequate, secure, and private internet service for remote work.
- Flexibility for infrequent travel when collaboration or business needs require it.
