Description

About Us

Our client is a leading general contractor dedicated to delivering high-quality building projects across the country. We pride ourselves on integrity, operational excellence, and teamwork. We are seeking a detail-oriented Project Accountant to manage project-level financials, cost tracking, and billing while working directly alongside our Project Managers and field operations teams.

Position Overview

The Project Accountant oversees all job-cost accounting functions for assigned construction projects from pre-construction through closeout. You will manage the subcontractor pay application process, owner progress billings (AIA G702/G703), cost-to-complete forecasting, and compliance tracking (lien waivers, insurance, certified payroll).

Key Responsibilities:

Job Costing & Financial Management

Set up new projects, budgets, and cost codes in the accounting system based on contract estimates.

Review, post, and track project costs, including subcontractor pay applications, material invoices, equipment costs, and direct labor.

Track project change orders (potential, pending, and approved) and adjust project budgets and contracts accordingly.

Assist Project Managers with monthly WIP (Work-in-Progress) schedule preparations, cost-to-complete forecasting, and variance analysis.

Billing & Cash Flow

Prepare monthly owner progress billing applications using standard AIA G702/G703 formats or owner-specific portal requirements (e.g., Procore, Textura).

Track accounts receivable (AR), monitor project retainage balances, and coordinate collection efforts with Project Managers.

Process subcontractor payments upon receipt of owner funding, strictly enforcing pay-when-paid provisions and lien waiver releases.

Compliance & Subcontractor Administration

Collect, review, and track conditional and unconditional lien waivers from subcontractors and lower-tier material suppliers.

Ensure subcontractor compliance, including active Certificates of Insurance (COI), required endorsements, and signed master subcontracts prior to invoice release.

Audit and submit certified payroll records for prevailing-wage or public works projects (if applicable).

Oversee final project closeout accounting, including final retainage release, audit clearances, and contract de-obligations.

Qualifications

Education: Bachelor’s degree in Accounting, Finance, Construction Management, or related field (equivalent direct experience will be considered).

Experience: 3+ years of dedicated job cost or project accounting experience in commercial construction, civil engineering, or general contracting.

Technical Skills:

Proficiency in construction accounting ERP systems (e.g., Sage 300 CRE / Timberline, Viewpoint Vista, Procore Financials, Foundation, or CMiC).

Familiarity with billing portals such as Textura, Procore, or GC Pay.

Advanced Excel skills (VLOOKUP/XLOOKUP, pivot tables, SUMIFS).

Core Knowledge: Thorough understanding of AIA billing documents, construction contract structures (GMP, Lump Sum, Cost Plus, T&M), retainage, and lien laws.

Benefits & Perks

Comprehensive health, dental, and vision insurance

401(k) with company match

Paid time off (PTO) and paid company holidays

Annual performance bonus

Professional development and continuing education support
