LOCATION: This position is a part-time position in the Consumer Advocacy Project (CAP) located in the Indianapolis office of Indiana Legal Services. The Consumer Advocacy Project is a special partnership with several Center for Working Families community centers in the Indianapolis area, whose aim is to address legal barriers of individuals receiving financial coaching from the centers to increase their financial stability and upward mobility.
JOB SUMMARY: The CAP staff attorney will provide legal assistance in a variety of legal matters; primarily the attorney will handle housing law and civil legal aid regarding those matters and perform other duties as assigned. The attorney will work with the CAP Project Director and under the supervision of the Indianapolis Managing Attorney.
RESPONSIBILITIES:
Provide high-quality legal representation in limited and extended service cases in a variety of legal areas, with a focus on consumer protection & debt defense, bankruptcy, driver’s license reinstatement, expungement.
Provide high-quality legal advice when a higher level of service is not warranted.
Conduct on-site applications for legal assistance and review to assess legal issues and needs.
Maintain a regular onsite presence along with the Project Director.
Assist the Project Director in providing regular educational events and legal clinics and with reporting requirements of the CAP funders.
Collaborate with community partners and other agencies & provide CAP partners technical assistance.
Comply with all LSC and grant requirements and all ILS policies and procedures.
QUALIFICATIONS:
Dedicated to the mission of Indiana Legal Services.
A license to practice law in Indiana and a Juris Doctor degree from an ABA-accredited law school is required.
At least three (3) years of attorney experience is preferred.
Ability to travel as needed to perform job responsibilities.
Excellent written and oral communication skills.
