Staff Backend Engineer

Summary

Build and shape a greenfield event-based customer communications platform in Java/Spring Boot on Azure with Terraform, owning DevOps and scalable architecture while exploring Agentic AI in the SDLC.

At Parser, we're looking for a Senior Java Engineer who's excited about event-based customer communications technology, data, and DevOps. This is a rare chance to get in on a greenfield project right from the start — your ideas on architecture and technical direction will genuinely shape what we build. You'll be joining a team that values curiosity, collaboration, and giving people room to grow.

Role Overview

We believe in owning what we build, end to end. You'll be part of a team that embraces DevOps, practising continuous integration, delivery, and support so our code stays healthy in production and beyond.

Things will naturally evolve as the business grows, but here's where you'll spend most of your energy:

  • Building high-quality software in Java (Spring Boot or similar frameworks) that you can be proud of.
  • Getting hands-on with Microsoft Azure and Terraform (Infrastructure as Code) — or diving in and learning as you go.
  • Championing CI/CD best practices so releases feel smooth, not stressful.
  • Keeping documentation clear and useful, so the whole team can build on your work.
  • Designing solutions that are robust, scalable, and built to last.
  • Bringing your engineering instincts to every decision, with latency, performance, and scalability as second nature.
  • Weighing up different design and coding patterns and picking the right tool for the job, not just the familiar one.

Key Responsibilities

Here's the toolkit you'll get to work with:

  • Languages: Java 21 is our bread and butter (or any other JVM language) — bonus points if you also enjoy JS or TypeScript
  • Frameworks: Spring Boot
  • Cloud: We mostly live in Azure and love Terraform for infrastructure as code, but we equally value people who understand how AWS, GCP and on-prem environments work
  • Databases: PostgreSQL for structured data, plus NoSQL databases like CouchDB, MongoDB, or Cassandra when the use case calls for it
  • Looking Ahead: we're exploring Agentic AI in the SDLC, and we'd love your curiosity here

What You'll Bring

  • A background in Computer Science, Software Engineering, or a related field — through a degree or equivalent hands-on experience.
  • Around 7+ years of experience in Software, Data, or ML engineering roles
  • A natural talent for problem-solving, with working proficiency in Python.
  • Some familiarity with LLMs, model architectures, and MCP, and experience building scalable, reliable AI systems.
  • Good working knowledge of container orchestration, scaling strategies, networking, and resource management in Kubernetes clusters.
  • Comfortable with CI/CD tools (e.g., GitHub Actions)
  • A good sense for the pros and cons of different design patterns and coding approaches, and the confidence to choose what's right for the problem at hand.
  • Genuine curiosity about Agentic AI and its growing role in the Software Development Lifecycle (SDLC).
  • Warm, clear communication, whether you're talking with engineers or business stakeholders.
  • A strong aptitude for influencing technical direction and building consensus across teams.
  • Comfortable navigating disagreements and helping the team find a constructive way through.
  • Confident presenting, with the ability to make technical concepts land for varied audiences.
