Staff Backend Engineer - Product

About Electricity Maps

Electricity Maps is the world's most comprehensive electricity data platform. We provide real-time, historical, and forecasted data on electricity systems worldwide - covering generation mix, electricity prices, carbon intensity, and renewable share.

Our data powers decisions across sustainability and energy markets: from companies like Google and Cisco optimising compute workloads and reporting emissions, to energy market participants using our forecasts to inform trading strategies and asset optimisation. We're a small, technical team based in Copenhagen, working at the intersection of energy systems and data.

About the role

The Electricity Maps API is our core commercial product - it's what companies rely on to make decisions about energy consumption or buying, emissions reporting, and grid-aware operations. Alongside it, our free map has become a reference point for the energy world. It's pulled up by the biggest news outlets covering energy stories, presented on stage at industry conferences worldwide, and used daily by traders reading the grid. It's often where commercial conversations start.

You'll think about everything that shapes the API, including both the API used by our commercial customers and the API that powers our free product. This means working on caching and data sourcing, application performance (what happens when one user hits the same query 1,000 times), our user database, the admin interface that controls API access, and the third-party integrations that keep our commercial tools in sync with the product. You'll work closely with the commercial and data teams, and take shared ownership of system design and long-term technical health, including the messy bits: bugs, edge cases, and tradeoffs between velocity and quality.

What You'll Do
  • Own backend architecture and evolution across the API and app - from data flow to performance to new features

  • Manage how data moves from our databases into the product (caching, sourcing, etc.)

  • Monitor and improve application performance, including edge cases like repeated heavy queries from a single user

  • Own our user database and the admin interface that manages who has access to the API

  • Build the backend support for new customer-facing features

  • Maintain our third-party data integrations (HubSpot, PostHog, and similar)

  • Hunt down and fix bugs tied to data or code quality

What We're Looking For
  • Senior, production backend experience end-to-end, including databases, caching, performance monitoring, admin tooling, and not just API endpoints

  • Strong taste in API design - you know what good looks like and why

  • Enough experience with APIs to spot problems early and suggest fixes that balance robustness, speed, and pragmatism

  • You care about the people using what you build, and it bothers you when something isn't working right

  • You are energized by shipping fast. A well-tested fix now that is refined later as we learn more

  • You are excited about working somewhere things aren't always fully defined yet

Our Stack: TypeScript-first, Linux environment, running in Google Cloud. We value engineers who can reason across languages and tools.

The details
  • Location: Copenhagen (Office first with flexibility)

  • Type: Full-time

  • Compensation: Competitive salary + stock options

  • Benefits: 6 weeks vacation, health insurance, annual company offsite, lunch and free snacks/drinks at the office.
