Staff Backend Software Engineer
Summary
Staff Backend Engineer leading architecture and engineering standards for scalable, resilient systems in Java/Kotlin, Spring Boot, and AWS, while mentoring teams and improving observability and CI/CD practices.
This position is listed on behalf of a partner company, who manages all applications and next steps. Our partner is looking for a Staff Backend Software Engineer based in Brazil.
This is a strategic technical leadership opportunity for an experienced backend engineer ready to operate beyond the scope of a single team. You will serve as a technical reference, shaping architecture and engineering standards across multiple teams and helping translate business priorities into sustainable technical decisions. The role focuses on highly available, distributed systems, scalability, resilience, observability, and engineering excellence. You will combine hands-on development of critical solutions with technical mentorship and architectural leadership. The position also offers the opportunity to influence how teams approach code quality, testing, CI/CD, security, performance, and incident management. It is an ideal environment for a Staff-level professional who enjoys solving complex problems, enabling other engineers, and driving meaningful technical evolution.
Accountabilities:
- Lead and evolve cross-team architectural decisions, with a strong focus on scalability, resilience, performance, and long-term sustainability.
- Act as a technical reference for the engineering organization, helping define which technologies, patterns, and solutions should be adopted across the stack.
- Develop critical backend solutions while providing technical direction on implementation choices and architectural trade-offs.
- Mentor engineers and promote engineering best practices, design patterns, clean code, and high-quality development standards.
- Define and disseminate standards for quality, security, performance, architecture, and engineering practices across technology teams.
- Raise the bar for code reviews, automated test coverage, CI/CD pipelines, quality gates, and semantic versioning.
- Support the evolution of observability and monitoring practices, ensuring systems have appropriate metrics, tracing, and operational visibility.
- Collaborate with peer teams to design solutions for internal customers and address challenges that span multiple services or domains.
- Identify technical debt, architectural bottlenecks, and opportunities for modernization, driving initiatives that improve the overall technology ecosystem.
- Support incident management and guide the definition and execution of post-mortems and action plans.
- Operate across application layers — from coding and architecture to observability — with a level of technical depth and influence beyond a Senior Engineer.
- Solid professional experience with Java and Kotlin, particularly in backend software development.
- Strong experience with Spring Boot, microservices, distributed systems, and software architecture.
- Hands-on experience with relational and non-relational databases, including MongoDB, DataStore, and PostgreSQL.
- Strong knowledge of AWS and cloud-native technologies.
- Practical experience with messaging and event-driven systems, including Kafka, SNS, and SQS.
- Experience with Docker, Kubernetes, and Terraform in production environments.
- Knowledge of monitoring and observability tools and practices, including Grafana, Prometheus, and New Relic.
- Experience developing APIs and integrations using asynchronous messaging.
- Strong understanding of software architecture, domain design, and scalable system design.
- Experience working with highly available, business-critical systems that process data and events at significant scale.
- Strong knowledge of engineering practices such as Clean Code, Design Patterns, Lint, GitFlow, automated testing, and CI/CD.
- Experience with incident management, root-cause analysis, post-mortems, and action-plan definition.
- Familiarity with AI-powered development tools such as Amazon Kiro, Claude, and Codex.
- Strong technical influence, with the ability to communicate architectural decisions clearly and align different technical and business stakeholders.
- Excellent organization, planning, collaboration, and negotiation skills.
- Systems-thinking mindset, with the ability to understand how services interact and identify architectural bottlenecks.
- Proactive and ownership-driven approach, particularly in environments undergoing refactoring and architectural evolution.
- Nice to have: experience designing AI platforms or AI-powered product architectures, particularly with advanced observability, APM, tracing, and SLOs.
- Nice to have: previous experience on a Staff or Principal engineering track within medium- or large-scale SaaS products.
- Nice to have: experience using AI to automate development processes, including unit-test generation, code review, spec-driven development, ADRs, and RFCs to improve cycle time and throughput.
- R$1,300 monthly food and meal allowance through a flexible card, with no payroll deduction.
- R$135 monthly home-office allowance, with no payroll deduction.

- Extended parental leave, including support for adoption, same-sex couples, and single-parent families.
- Childcare allowance for children up to 5 years old.
- Gympass/Wellhub access to fitness, wellness, and health services through a single membership.
- Digital healthcare platform offering two free psychology consultations and two free nutrition consultations per month.
- Pet health plan with nationwide coverage and reimbursements of up to 100%.
- Discounts on English and Spanish courses through partner language schools, including online and in-person options.
- Profit Sharing (PLR) when the team reaches its annual goals.
