Staff Data Platform Engineer

Salary: $250,000 – $300,000 per year

You will own the data platform end to end: every source a customer connects, the central database it all lands in, and the overview that goes back out to them. It is a founding-level role where you design the architecture and build it yourself, hands on. The stack is PostgreSQL on AWS, and the work is hybrid from Sydney.

The product works and already serves enterprise customers. The job now is to turn it into a platform that scales, and you will set the direction for it.

What you will do

The platform runs on PostgreSQL and AWS, with TypeScript and Node.js services today, and is moving from serverless functions towards containerised, event-driven services.

• Bring the data in. Customers send data from a very large number of sources and in every shape. You design and run the pipelines that take it all in.
• Own the central database. Design the core data model and the contracts around it, and keep it fast, correct and safe through every migration and schema change.
• Serve it back out. Turn that data into the overview customers rely on, and connect cleanly to their own systems.
• Build the platform it runs on. Containerised services, queues and event-driven jobs on AWS, isolated regional environments, and the security controls enterprise customers expect.
• Set the direction. Lead the architecture and the engineering standards as the team grows. This is not a people-management role today.

What you will bring

• Deep PostgreSQL, and the pipelines that feed it: data modelling, query performance, migrations and row-level security, plus ETL and ELT work that pulls many sources into one database reliably, with data quality checks and safe reprocessing.
• Time spent in an environment with very large data volumes. Telco, energy and other complex back-end settings all count, ideally in a startup or scale-up environment.
• 8+ years of backend engineering, including at least 3 years designing data-intensive, multi-tenant B2B SaaS platforms.
• You architect, build and run it: AWS at depth, including containers and infrastructure as code, and you have taken a product from early architecture to scale at a startup.
• You communicate clearly and hold your own, explaining trade-offs to founders, customers and their IT and security teams, in conversation and in writing.
• You want to work in a startup, in a small, high-achieving team where your work will have a huge impact on the business.

• TypeScript and Node.js in production.

• Regulated or complex data domains.
