Staff Engineer - Java
Summary
Design and build scalable Java/Spring backend services for an S3-compatible data storage platform, focusing on performance, reliability, and distributed-system architecture.
We are seeking a highly experienced Staff Engineer – Java to contribute to the design and development of scalable, high-performance solutions within the EXA Data Services (S3DS/NSDS) product line.
The ideal candidate will have strong expertise in Java, Spring Framework, and distributed systems, along with hands-on experience building large scale data service or storage platforms. This role requires strong ownership, solid system design skills, and the ability to collaborate across engineering, QA, DevOps, and support teams.
Key Responsibilities
Design and develop scalable components for the S3 Data Service platform.
Participate in architecture discussions and contribute to technical design decisions.
Develop high quality, maintainable, and performant backend services using Java and Spring.
Collaborate with product management to translate requirements into technical solutions.
Work closely with QA, DevOps, and L3 support teams to ensure product stability and reliability.
Identify and implement improvements in performance, scalability, and reliability.
Follow best practices in coding, testing, documentation, and system design.
Participate in code reviews and contribute to improving engineering standards.
Troubleshoot complex issues across application, infrastructure, and distributed system layers.
Required Skills and Experience
10–14 years of experience in software development with strong expertise in Java.
Hands-on experience with Spring Framework (Core, Boot, Data) and backend service development.
Experience building REST APIs and microservices based architectures.
Strong understanding of system design, architecture patterns, and distributed systems.
Experience working with data storage technologies such as Cassandra, Hadoop, or Elasticsearch.
Familiarity with S3 object storage protocol or related storage technologies.
Strong knowledge of Linux systems, networking, and debugging at the infrastructure level.
Experience with Maven or similar build systems.
Ability to analyze complex problems and deliver reliable solutions.
Preferred Qualifications
Experience with Python scripting.
Familiarity with containerization technologies such as Docker, Podman, or Kubernetes.
Experience working with CI/CD pipelines and DevOps practices.
Prior exposure to distributed file systems or high availability storage solutions.
Understanding of security, data consistency models, and fault tolerant architectures.
