Summary

Staff/Lead Software Engineer in Commonwealth Bank's EC Technology team, building and operating production services, APIs and data integrations that detect and investigate financial crime, while modernising shared platforms and embedding AI/agentic capabilities. Core stack: Java/Kotlin/Go/Python, React/TypeScript, AWS, Kubernetes, Kafka.

Staff Software Engineer

  • Engineer production services, APIs, data integrations and interfaces that help detect and investigate financial crime.
  • Work across the full product surface, solving complex problems while influencing design and uplifting engineering capability.
  • Help modernise shared platforms and responsibly embed AI and agentic capabilities into critical investigation workflows.

Do work that matters

Join EC Technology and help engineer the platforms that detect and investigate financial crime across the bank. You’ll work hands-on across services, APIs, data integration and the interfaces used by detection and investigation teams.

As a Staff Software Engineer, you’ll be a key technical contributor who ships production code, shapes design decisions and helps other engineers grow. You’ll help modernise our technology by reusing and standardising shared capabilities, reducing duplication and retiring legacy solutions where appropriate. You’ll also help build reliable AI and agentic capabilities that augment human decisions while maintaining appropriate controls.

See yourself in our team

EC Technology builds the capabilities that support the detection and investigation of fraud and financial crime. The broader Group Security function brings together cyber security, fraud technology, fraud management, investigations and resilience to safeguard the bank and protect customers.

In this role, you will:

  • Design, build and operate production services and APIs with clear contracts and integration boundaries.
  • Contribute to architecture and design decisions, including refactoring, modularisation and performance improvements.
  • Consolidate capabilities onto shared platforms and treat the retirement of legacy technology as core engineering work.
  • Build and maintain continuous integration and delivery pipelines, automated testing and progressive delivery practices.
  • Establish strong reliability and observability through dashboards, alerting, service-level objectives and operational ownership.
  • Engineer secure and dependable AI and agentic features, including orchestration, evaluation and guardrails.
  • Embed security, privacy, reliability and regulatory controls into design and delivery.
  • Raise engineering standards through thoughtful code reviews, pairing and clear technical reasoning.

We’re interested in hearing from people who:

You’re a versatile software engineer with strong computer science foundations and the confidence to work across technologies as the problem changes. You combine hands-on delivery with sound technical judgement, take ownership of production outcomes and help create an environment where engineers can do their best work.

  • Bring strong foundations in algorithms, data structures, concurrency and system design.
  • Have experience across backend services, APIs and data integration, with openness to contributing to internal user interfaces when required.
  • Can design and build services using a modern typed language such as Java, Kotlin, Go or Python, or comparable technologies.
  • Full-stack capability, including experience with React and TypeScript or equivalent technologies, as well as backend-for-frontend layers
  • Understand cloud-native delivery, containers, automated pipelines and production observability.
  • Apply a platform mindset by reusing proven capabilities, reducing unnecessary duplication and simplifying technology estates.
  • Build security, privacy, reliability and risk controls into solutions from the outset.
  • Learn new languages, frameworks and tools according to the needs of the problem.
  • Improve engineering outcomes through collaboration, mentoring, code review and well-reasoned design decisions.
  • Exposure to technologies such as AWS, Kubernetes, Docker, GitHub Actions, Argo CD, React, TypeScript, Kafka, Grafana or Prometheus will be useful.
  • Experience building or operating AI-enabled systems, including model integration, orchestration, evaluation and guardrails, would also be valuable.
  • Equivalent tools and transferable experience are welcomed.
