Staff Software Engineer (m/w/d) for telemedicine platform
Summary
Build and evolve the full-stack telemedicine platform used by doctors, opticians, and patients, ensuring scalability, reliability, and compliance with medical standards.
This is an individual contributor role. No direct reports, real technical authority: you set direction on architecture and engineering practice, and you build in the same codebase as everyone else in the team. Staff/Senior here means deeper, not further from the code. Your job is to keep our systems fast to iterate, reliable in production, and ready for international expansion and scaling.
- Own the architecture of our full-stack platform – frontend, backend, data, AWS – and evolve it under real product pressure instead of rewriting it
- Own our testing strategy: where we invest in unit, integration and end-to-end coverage, what we deliberately do not test, and how tests stay fast enough that nobody skips them
- Push our agentic coding practice forward: tooling, guardrails and testing discipline that make us faster without putting unverified code into a live product
- Shape scope together with product: surface the cheap 80 % solution, and say clearly when something is not worth building
- Build so that what ships is operable and auditable by design (e.g. ISO 27001, ISO 13485), without turning engineering into paperwork
- Go wherever the problem is – a scaling bottleneck one week, a broken integration the next – you fix it properly
- Several years of professional software engineering experience (roughly 7+), most of it on systems that reached real users
- Deeply hands-on across the stack: strong in the frontend, at home in the backend, comfortable in the infrastructure and web technologies around it
- A strong background in TypeScript, and well-formed opinions you can defend and revise
- A clear product focus: you care about what ships, what runs, and what users experience
- You speak fluent English (C1); German is a plus
- Experience in a start-up or scale-up where speed and quality both mattered
- Comfort taking ownership and shaping processes nobody has defined yet
- A degree in a STEM field – equivalent practical experience counts more
- Exposure to regulated software, medical devices or health data
- Flexible working hours and hybrid work with home office options
- Subsidized Deutschlandticket (public transport pass) for employees
- Personal learning & development budget for trainings, conferences, and professional growth
- High level of ownership, fast decision-making, and real opportunities to help shape the company
- Regular feedback, short decision paths, and individual development opportunities
- International team with close collaboration, regular exchange, and shared team events
- Collaboration with experts from optometry, ophthalmology, software & AI development, and strategy consulting
- Monthly contribution toward a Wellpass membership
- Free access to Nilo Health for mental health and wellbeing
- Competitive salary matching your role and experience
- Modern, dog-friendly office in the heart of Munich, close to the main train station (Hauptbahnhof)
- Contributing to a leading teleophthalmology platform that sustainably improves access to eye care
- Established B2B2C model with over 800 partner optician locations and more than 500,000 screenings performed
