Role Summary

Sonatype is evolving how we create product experiences with AI-assisted development. To do this well, we need clear UX systems, standards, and tooling that help AI-assisted workflows produce product experiences that are logical, usable, accessible, and aligned to how Sonatype software works.

The UX Systems Engineer rotation is an opportunity for someone with a software engineering background to work within the UX / Product Design group. This role will own and build the systems, rules, and tools that enable AI-assisted workflows to generate product experience outputs that are close to production-ready - not just visually consistent, but well-structured, efficient, and thoughtfully integrated into existing product workflows.

This rotation is ideal for someone who wants to drive meaningful change across teams, expand their UX and systems skills, and help define how Sonatype creates high-quality product experiences at AI scale.

What you will do

  • Own and evolve reusable UX systems that support high-quality product experiences across Sonatype.

  • Create machine-readable and human-readable guidance for components, page templates, user flows, interaction patterns, content guidance, accessibility rules, and UX standards.

  • Partner with Product Design to turn UX expectations into practical patterns, guardrails, and tools that AI-assisted workflows and engineering teams can apply.

  • Develop tooling, prompts, skills, plugins, rules, or other mechanisms that improve the quality and completeness of AI-generated product experience outputs.

  • Proactively find and fix gaps in our design system, documentation, tooling, and UX standards as teams adopt AI-assisted workflows.

  • Work directly with engineering teams to understand how they use UX systems and AI-assisted tooling, what works, what breaks down, and what needs to be built next.

  • Help define where AI-assisted workflows should be trusted, where human review is required, and how teams should evaluate experience quality.

  • Create feedback loops between UX and engineering so improvements are driven by real usage, not theory.

What you will bring

  • Software engineering experience and the ability to build tools, write code, and understand how product teams ship interfaces.

  • Strong systems thinking and comfort turning ambiguous UX expectations into clear, reusable structures.

  • A drive to enable AI-assisted product development through better systems, constraints, tooling, and quality checks.

  • Interest in product design, user experience, accessibility, and design systems.

  • Ability to think beyond screens and components to the full user flow, including sequence, logic, simplicity, content, and fit within the broader product experience.

  • Strong communication skills across teams and departments.

  • Willingness to learn UX principles and apply them thoughtfully in practical, production-minded ways.

What Success Looks like

  • AI-assisted workflows can generate user flows that are logical, efficient, simple, aligned to Sonatype product expectations, and close enough to require significantly less UX rework.

  • Engineering teams have clear, usable systems and tooling that help them create product experiences that fit within existing workflows, not one-off screens disconnected from the rest of the product.

  • Product designers spend less time repairing avoidable experience issues, including broken flows, unnecessary complexity, poor integration with existing workflows, inaccessible patterns, inconsistent UI, and off-standard content.

  • UX guidance is easy to find, understand, apply, and automate.

  • Gaps in our UX systems, documentation, tooling, and standards are actively fixed as they are discovered.

  • Sonatype has a practical, scalable model for creating high-quality product experiences Reathrough AI-assisted development.
