Overview

GovStar seeks an experienced Statistician / Data Analyst with strong analytical skills and the technical fluency to support complex, data-intensive missions for our national security customers.

This role will work closely with data engineers and customers to help understand, analyze, validate, and improve mission-critical data as existing data environments evolve toward more modern, automated architectures. The ideal candidate combines strong statistical reasoning and analytical judgment with practical experience working directly with databases, structured datasets, Python, SQL, and modern data platforms.

The successful candidate will be comfortable moving between detailed analysis and broader mission questions, understanding not only what the data says, but also its quality, limitations, relationships, and implications for operational and strategic decision-making.

Responsibilities

  • Analyze complex datasets to identify trends, relationships, anomalies, and insights that support mission and operational decision-making.
  • Apply statistical methods and analytical techniques to evaluate data, answer business and mission questions, and support evidence-based recommendations.
  • Work closely with data engineers to understand source systems, data structures, transformations, and downstream analytical requirements.
  • Use SQL to query, join, filter, aggregate, and validate data across relational databases and data environments.
  • Use Python and related analytical tools to manipulate, analyze, validate, and refine datasets.
  • Assess data quality, completeness, consistency, and reliability and collaborate with technical teams to identify and resolve data issues.
  • Help define analytical requirements and translate stakeholder questions into clear data and reporting needs.
  • Collaborate with stakeholders to develop reporting standards, analytical methodologies, and repeatable approaches to data interpretation.
  • Support the validation of data pipelines, transformations, and automated workflows by evaluating whether resulting datasets accurately support analytical and reporting needs.
  • Contribute analytical expertise to data governance discussions, including data definitions, quality standards, documentation, and appropriate use of data.
  • Develop clear analytical documentation describing methodologies, assumptions, findings, limitations, and conclusions.
  • Communicate complex analytical findings clearly to both technical and non-technical stakeholders.
  • Collaborate across technical and mission teams to ensure analytical work remains aligned with customer priorities and operational objectives.
  • Support initiatives from initial problem definition and data exploration through analysis, validation, and delivery of actionable findings.

Relevant Technologies

  • Data Analysis: Python, Pandas
  • Database Management: SQL, PostgreSQL
  • Modern Data Platforms: Snowflake, Databricks, Tableau
  • Cloud Technologies: AWS, Azure
  • Version Control: Git, GitHub, GitLab
  • Project Management Tools: Jira
  • Diagramming / Documentation Tools: Microsoft Visio

Candidates are not expected to demonstrate the same depth of software engineering, architecture, or infrastructure expertise as a Data Engineer. However, strong candidates should be technically proficient enough to work independently with data and collaborate effectively within modern data engineering environments.

Minimum Requirements

  • U.S. citizenship.
  • Must live in the United States in either the Eastern or Central time zone.
  • Must be able to obtain a DHS Public Trust clearance.
  • Bachelor’s degree or higher in Statistics, Data Science, Mathematics, Economics, Computer Science, Operations Research, or another quantitative or related field.
  • 5+ years of professional experience in statistics, data analysis, data science, quantitative analysis, or a related discipline.
  • Strong experience analyzing complex datasets and applying statistical methods to real-world problems.
  • Practical experience using SQL to query and analyze data stored in relational databases.
  • Experience using Python and associated data analysis tools such as Pandas.
  • Working knowledge of relational database concepts and experience working with structured data.
  • Ability to evaluate data quality, recognize anomalies and inconsistencies, and determine whether data is appropriate for a given analytical purpose.
  • Ability to translate complex mission or business questions into structured analytical approaches.
  • Excellent written, verbal, and interpersonal communication skills.
  • Ability to communicate statistical concepts, analytical findings, assumptions, and limitations clearly to both technical and non-technical audiences.
  • Strong attention to detail and commitment to producing accurate, defensible analytical work.
  • Strong desire to support our country by working on mission-critical systems.

Preferred Requirements

  • Experience working with immigration-related data, programs, processes, or analytical environments.
  • Experience supporting data analysis within the federal government.
  • Experience working with PostgreSQL.
  • Experience working with Snowflake and/or Databricks.
  • Familiarity with modern data warehousing, lakehouse, or large-scale analytical environments.
  • Familiarity with AWS and/or Azure data environments.
  • Experience collaborating directly with data engineers, software engineers, database developers, or system integration teams.
  • Experience supporting data modernization, data quality, data governance, reporting modernization, or analytical automation initiatives.
  • Experience using Git or other version-control tools in collaborative technical environments.

GovStar Expectations

  • Passion for solving complex technical challenges in support of U.S. national security objectives.
  • Willingness to learn, grow, and stretch outside established areas of expertise.
  • Strong interpersonal skills and the ability to build trusted relationships with customers, partners, and teammates.
  • Proactive communication, self-direction, ownership, and the ability to start and lead initiatives without waiting to be told what to do.
  • Commitment to GovStar’s collective growth through knowledge sharing and participation in internal initiatives, innovation efforts, onboarding, and business-development support.
  • Professionalism, humility, curiosity, customer empathy, and a collaborative, team-first mindset.

Compensation & Benefits
