Student Intern

Open 61d

Overview

Want to get out of the classroom and onto a real job site? Launch your career in the trades by helping us rebuild Lafayette at 100 Poydras! As an LPSS Intern, you’ll be part of a "living classroom," working on a massive 2.4-acre campus restoration. This site has a unique history—it was originally an elementary school and later a sheriff’s facility used for inmate reentry before sitting abandoned for the last 5 years. Now, you’ll work alongside the pros to turn this blighted property into a top-tier training center. This 120-hour "learn-to-earn" internship is designed to give you the real-world skills you need to start a high-paying career right here in LA.

Responsibilities

  • Support Phase 1 (Secure & Salvage): Get the site ready by clearing debris, securing buildings, and salvaging materials for the renovation.
  • Site Maintenance: Keep the workspace professional and safe by handling supervised shopkeeping and sitekeeping duties.
  • Building Restoration: Get hands-on with interior demo and painting for Building 3 under the guidance of MGAworks supervisors.
  • Safety First: Follow all safety protocols to keep yourself and your team safe while working on a professional site.

Qualifications

  • Current LPSS Student: Must be enrolled in a construction-based trade program at the W.D. Smith Career Center.
  • Ready to Work: No experience? No problem. We provide the training; you just need to show up ready to learn.
  • Team Player: Ability to follow directions and work hard with your crew.
  • Hands-On Attitude: You should be comfortable working in a physically active, outdoor construction environment.

Benefits

  • Get Paid: Earn $10/hour while you learn the ropes.
  • Level Up: Work toward your HBI PACT or other industry-based certifications (IBCs).
  • More Opportunities: This isn't just one job—it’s a gateway to more work on other major projects and community-led initiatives.
  • Career Jumpstart: This internship is a direct pipeline to state-registered apprenticeships and connections with local bosses looking to hire.
  • Build Your City: Take pride in fixing up a local landmark and turning it into a resource for the whole community.

**Bringing your own tools is not necessary but appreciated. Common tools include: Measuring Tape, Speed Square, Sharpie, Pencil, and Scale Ruler.
