Substation Design Engineer (Primary Plant)

WSP in Africa is growing its Power & Energy team and is looking for Substation Primary Plant Design Engineers and Technologists at Junior, Intermediate, and Senior Levels.

You will contribute to transmission, distribution and renewable-energy grid connection projects across Africa and international markets, working on LV, MV, HV and EHV systems up to 765 kV.

What You’ll Do

  • Develop substation layouts, single-line diagrams, sections, equipment arrangements, earthing, lighting and lightning protection designs.

  • Complete design calculations and studies covering clearances, busbars, equipment ratings, insulation coordination and earthing.

  • Prepare specifications, reports, schedules, bills of quantities and tender documentation.

  • Review supplier and contractor designs and support construction, testing and commissioning.

  • Collaborate with multidisciplinary and global teams on utility, IPP, Solar PV, Wind and BESS projects.

What You’ll Bring

  • BSc, BEng or BTech in Electrical Engineering, or an equivalent recognised qualification.

  • Relevant substation primary plant design experience

  • ECSA Professional or Candidate registration, as appropriate to your career level.

  • Knowledge of IEC, IEEE, SANS, NRS, Eskom or comparable utility standards.

  • Experience in transmission, distribution, grid connection or utility-scale renewable-energy projects.
