Substitute School Crossing Guard

The Village of Brookfield Police Department is seeking qualified candidates to fill the seasonal Substitute School Crossing Guard position to assist the Department in protecting pedestrian safety within the community. A school crossing guard serves as a highly visible, positive role model to students, pedestrians, and motorists, and is an integral member of the Brookfield Police Department. The selected candidate will receive training; therefore, prior crossing guard experience is not required.


Pay and Hours

  • The hourly rate is $18.00 (paid for two hours - one hour in the morning and one hour in the afternoon).
  • The work hours are 7:30 a.m. to 8:30 a.m. and 2:45 p.m. to 3:30 p.m. on school days throughout the school year (hours vary from school to school between the listed times).


Duties and Qualifications

  • Ensure the safety of students at street crossings by using proper crossing techniques.
  • Observe and report any conditions or incidents that create or compromise the safety to students, pedestrians, motorists, or crossing guards.
  • Must be able to hold or display a stop sign while crossing students.
  • Must be able to work outdoors, including during adverse weather conditions.
  • Ability to stand or walk for prolonged times at the assigned crossing location.
  • Ability to work independently without direct supervision.
  • Attend periodic training meetings, as required.
  • Must be at least 18 years of age.
  • High School degree or the equivalent at time of application.
  • Display an overall enthusiasm for, and commitment to, serving as a positive role model to children.
  • Have an engaging and encouraging communication style while interacting with the public and Village staff.
  • Be able to demonstrate an ability to relate to and supervise children.
  • Must provide own form of transportation.

If hired, successful completion of a criminal background check, and post-offer physical and drug screen are required.
