Substitute School Nurse

Position Summary

The Substitute School Nurse is responsible for providing temporary nursing services to students and staff in the absence of the regularly assigned school nurse. The Substitute School Nurse promotes the health, safety, and well-being of students by providing appropriate nursing care, responding to medical emergencies, administering medications as authorized, maintaining health records, and implementing district health policies and procedures in accordance with applicable New Jersey laws and regulations.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities:

• Provide nursing care to students who become ill or injured during the school day.
• Assess student health concerns and determine appropriate interventions, referrals, and notifications.
• Respond to medical emergencies and provide first aid and emergency care within the scope of licensure and training.
• Administer medications in accordance with physician orders, parental authorization, district policies, and applicable New Jersey requirements.
• Follow individualized healthcare plans, emergency action plans, and other applicable student health protocols.
• Monitor students with chronic health conditions and other medical needs as outlined in their healthcare plans.
• Maintain accurate, confidential, and timely documentation of nursing assessments, treatments, medications, and student health incidents.
• Communicate with parents/guardians, school administrators, staff, and healthcare providers as appropriate regarding student health concerns.
• Identify and report suspected communicable diseases and follow applicable infection control procedures and public health guidance.
• Maintain the confidentiality of student health information in accordance with applicable laws and district policies.
• Follow established procedures for contacting emergency medical services and notifying parents/guardians and school administration when necessary.
• Perform other related duties as assigned by the building principal or district administration.

License or Certificate:

• NJ School Nurse certificate or substitute certification and NJ RN license
• Current certification in Cardio-Pulmonary Resuscitation (CPR).

Qualifications:

• School nursing experience preferred.
• Knowledge of basic nursing practices, student health needs, medication administration, emergency response procedures, and infection control.
• Ability to exercise sound clinical judgment, maintain accurate records, communicate effectively, and work collaboratively with students, parents/guardians, and school personnel.
• Ability to maintain confidentiality and demonstrate professionalism, flexibility, and sound judgment.

Additional Requirement:
Successful completion of all applicable district employment requirements, including criminal history record clearance and other required documentation.

Salary: $225 per diem
