Summer Internship Programme - Firmware

Join AoFrio's Summer Internship Programme: Embedded Systems/Firmware from 23 November 2026 – 12 February 2027

Fancy getting your firmware running on hardware used by brands like Coca-Cola, PepsiCo, and AB InBev - before you've even graduated? If you're passionate about embedded systems, low-power design and squeezing performance out of constrained hardware, this internship is for you.

We're a global hardware-enabled SaaS company delivering cutting-edge IoT technology that helps the world's biggest food and beverage brands run smarter, more sustainable operations.

Our interns aren't here to shadow - they're paired with a dedicated mentor and dropped straight into a real, unsolved R&D challenge in commercial refrigeration and IoT. You'll bring fresh eyes to problems our engineers have been chewing on, and walk away having actually built something.

Projects you might join include:
  • Building a virtual refrigeration cabinet simulator so control firmware can be tested in minutes instead of days
  • Getting on-device beverage SKU recognition running on a low-cost microcontroller and camera, with no image ever leaving the cooler
  • Working out how to squeeze the most position-reporting life out of a cooler's battery when it's off mains, using the Nordic nRF9151 and Zephyr

Work hands-on with embedded firmware, low-power hardware, and edge AI and collaborate with motivational mentors.

What you'll get:
  • A dedicated mentor who wants you to succeed, not just supervise you
  • Ownership of a real technical problem, not busywork
  • A seat at the table with the wider engineering team from day one

We're looking for students who are:
  • Curious, collaborative, and eager to learn
  • Studying embedded systems, electronics, computer engineering, or related
  • Excited by low-power firmware, embedded C/C++, and getting software to run on constrained hardware
  • Keen to show off any "garage projects" or lab experience
  • Ready to bring their energy and ideas into the room and maybe grow their career here!

To qualify for our internship programme, you will:
  • Be currently enrolled or recently graduated from a New Zealand tertiary education institution, studying towards a Bachelor's or postgraduate qualification
  • If you're a recent graduate, you must have completed your final semester after November 2025
  • Be legally entitled to work in New Zealand

Why AoFrio?
With over 3 million connected devices across six continents, AoFrio is the global leader in IoT for refrigeration, but our Auckland HQ still feels like a place where your ideas get heard on day one. Our engineers, developers and innovators genuinely love having interns around: you bring the curiosity and fresh energy that keeps a growing team sharp and we back that up with real support, hands-on mentorship and a genuine commitment to your growth, not just a project box to tick.

We're proud of our inclusive, collaborative culture, where interns are treated as future teammates, not temporary help. Our goal is to build long-term relationships with students and past interns are now permanent members of the team.

Ready to build something real, get proper mentorship, and bring your energy to a team that wants it? Apply now for our Summer Internship Programme!
