Reporting to the Tailings Storage Facility (TSF) Manager, the Superintendent -Tailings Storage Facility (TSF) will be responsible for the day-to-day management and supervision of all Tailings Storage Facility (TSF) operational teams at the Lumwana Copper Mine. The role acts as Deputy Responsible Tailings Facility Engineer (Deputy RTFE) under the Barrick Tailings Management Standard (BCG-MI-ST-01), supporting the Tailings Manager in fulfilling all RTFE obligations. The Tailings Superintendent directly manages four operational functions: the Operations Team, the Piping & Pumping Team, the Laboratory Team, and provides day-to-day coordination of the Engineer of Record's QA and design teams on site
Your duties will include but are not limited to the following
Act as Deputy RTFE; assume full RTFE accountability when the Tailings Manager is absent from site, including all reporting, escalation, and decision-making obligations.
Maintain an intimate, up-to-date understanding of the TSF design basis, construction history, current performance, and future performance objectives consistent with Barrick Deputy RTFE requirements.
Participate in Potential Failure Mode Analysis (PFMA) reviews, formal risk assessments, and Critical Controls Management Plan (CCMP) updates alongside the Tailings Manager and EoR.
Support the Tailings Manager in maintaining the OMS Manual; lead delivery of operational training to supervisors and operators on OMS requirements and TARP protocols.
Conduct daily Routine Inspections (RIs) of the TSF in compliance with OMS Manual requirements; complete inspection forms and submit to the Tailings Manager the same day.
Assist the Tailings Manager in coordinating Dam Safety Inspections (DSIs) and Dam Safety Reviews (DSRs); accompany the EoR and review panel during all site walkovers.
Monitor Quantitative Performance Objectives (QPOs) on a shift-by-shift and daily basis; initiate TARP responses when trigger levels are approached or exceeded and escalate immediately to the Tailings Manager.
Collect, reduce, review, and report geotechnical, hydrological, and environmental instrumentation data; contribute data and analysis to quarterly monitoring reports prepared by the Tailings Manager.
Support preparation and regular testing of the Emergency Preparedness and Response Plan (EPRP); ensure all operational teams are drilled, competent, and clear on their roles.
Maintain site records and document management consistent with Section 8 of BCG-MI-ST-01
To be considered for the position, you must meet the following requirements:
Bachelor’s Degree in Civil Engineering, Geotechnical Engineering, Mining Engineering, or a related discipline.
Minimum 10 years of experience in tailings or geotechnical operations, with at least 3 years in a superintendent or senior supervisory role managing multiple teams on an active TSF.
Demonstrated hands-on experience managing TSF deposition operations, pipeline and pumping infrastructure, and a site-based tailings laboratory.
Experience coordinating with external EoR or design consultant teams in a construction or operational setting.
Familiarity with the GISTM (2020) and the RTFE/Deputy RTFE role requirements under BCG-MI-ST-01 or equivalent corporate standard.
Registered as a Professional Engineer with EIZ.
Demonstrated ability to manage a large, multicultural operational team across 24/7 operations in a remote environment.
Experience in sub-Saharan Africa or similar environments is advantageous
