Position Overview

Lead materials and supply chain activities for a manufacturing operation supporting both quick-ship and engineered-to-order projects. This role manages the Buyer Planner team, oversees material availability and inventory performance, and works closely with Project Management, Sales, Engineering, Production, Quality, and suppliers.

The position combines daily materials management with longer-term planning for critical components, supplier performance, inventory investment, and supply chain risk.

Key Responsibilities

  • Lead, coach, and develop the Buyer Planner team, including workload planning, performance management, training, and cross-training.
  • Oversee material planning and purchasing activities using ERP/MRP systems.
  • Align material requirements with project schedules, production releases, and customer commitments.
  • Participate in project kickoffs to identify BOM requirements, long-lead materials, supply risks, and material commitments.
  • Manage material shortages and supply risks by coordinating alternatives, suppliers, Project Management, and Operations.
  • Work with Sales on new opportunities, demand forecasts, lead times, customer stocking programs, blanket orders, and consignment arrangements.
  • Develop strategies for critical and long-lead components, including specialty breakers, bus assemblies, power electronic modules, custom enclosures, and transformers.
  • Identify single-source risks and develop mitigation plans such as dual sourcing, safety stock, supplier-managed inventory, and LTAs.
  • Oversee inventory performance, including inventory turns, excess and obsolete inventory (E&O), days of supply, safety stock, and working capital.
  • Lead E&O reviews and annual physical inventory activities.
  • Establish inventory policies covering safety stock, reorder points, lot sizing, and cycle counts.
  • Manage supplier performance using on-time delivery, quality/PPM, lead-time accuracy, and responsiveness metrics.
  • Conduct supplier business reviews and coordinate corrective actions, including SCARs.
  • Support supplier qualification and strategic sourcing activities.
  • Negotiate or oversee pricing agreements, blanket POs, and long-term agreements (LTAs).
  • Maintain ERP data accuracy, including item masters, BOMs, supplier lead times, and planning parameters.
  • Review MRP output and resolve planning issues, parameter problems, and data inaccuracies.
  • Prepare weekly and monthly supply chain reports covering material availability, shortages, supplier performance, inventory turns, and E&O.
  • Lead continuous improvement efforts involving ERP optimization, supplier lead-time reduction, dock-to-stock improvements, inventory reduction, 5S, and Lean supply chain practices.
  • Communicate supply risks, commodity trends, supply constraints, tariffs, and other market conditions to leadership.

Required Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s degree in Supply Chain Management, Business, Operations Management, Engineering, or a related field.
  • 7–10+ years of progressive supply chain experience in manufacturing, including at least 3 years supervising buyers, planners, or Buyer Planners.
  • Experience managing material planning and procurement in an electromechanical, electrical equipment, or industrial manufacturing environment.
  • Power distribution industry experience strongly preferred.
  • Advanced experience with ERP/MRP systems, such as SAP, Oracle, Epicor, Infor, IFS, or comparable systems.
  • Demonstrated success improving inventory turns while maintaining material availability.
  • Experience managing supplier performance, including QBRs, SCARs, and supplier development.
  • Ability to balance daily material shortages with strategic sourcing, inventory, and supply-risk decisions.
  • Strong cross-functional experience working with Project Management, Sales, Engineering, Production, and Finance.
  • Excellent communication and leadership skills.
  • Proficiency with Microsoft Excel and data analysis tools for inventory, spend, and supplier reporting.

Preferred Qualifications

  • APICS CPIM or CSCP, ISM C.P.M., or CPSM certification.
  • Experience with power distribution products such as PDCs, STS, RPPs, switchgear, UPS systems, and related electromechanical components.
  • Knowledge of UL, ANSI, NEMA, NEC, and IEC standards related to power distribution equipment.
  • Experience developing commodity strategies for breakers, bus duct, transformers, enclosures, and power electronics.
  • Lean / Six Sigma Green Belt or Black Belt experience.
  • Experience with VMI, consignment inventory, supplier-stocked buffers, or blanket PO/call-off programs.
  • Experience with import compliance, customs, and international suppliers.

Key Performance Areas

  • Material availability of 98% or better by required-on-floor date.
  • Supplier on-time delivery of 95% or better.
  • Progress toward 10 inventory turns per year.
  • Reduction and timely disposition of excess and obsolete inventory.
  • Reduction of production interruptions caused by preventable material shortages.
  • Supplier quality improvement and timely SCAR closure.
  • Proper positioning of critical long-lead materials.

Working Conditions

  • On-site position with daily presence required; not remote or hybrid.
  • Regular work in manufacturing, warehouse, and receiving areas with exposure to moderate noise, industrial equipment, and electrical assemblies.
  • Travel up to 20% for supplier visits, sourcing reviews, industry conferences, and occasional customer activities.
  • Must be available for escalated supply issues outside normal business hours when production continuity is at risk.
  • Ability to walk manufacturing areas, access storage locations, and participate in physical inventory activities.
