System Administrator I - Public Safety

The City of Independence is seeking highly motivated, solution‑oriented individuals to join the Technology Services Department. As a member of the Technology Services team, the Systems Administrator I will be part of a culture of innovation, initiative, and collaboration. Guided by the City’s Strategic Plan, this position provides opportunities to showcase technical expertise and ingenuity. This role works as part of a team to install, maintain, and troubleshoot technology systems that support public safety operations for the Police Department. The Systems Administrator I will contribute to developing service delivery standards and best practices, and will serve as a subject matter expert for the City’s public safety technology systems.
Essential Duties & Responsibilities

Assist in support and troubleshooting of computer hardware, software, telephones, and networks
Assist in designing, upgrading, and troubleshooting IT systems
Assist in providing specifications for various technology systems’ architecture
Responsible for monitoring IT hardware operations to ensure proper configurations
Prepare for and implement enhancements and upgrades to IT systems
Advise network users of hardware requirements, configurations, and limitations
Evaluates and reports on new technologies to enhance capabilities of the network

Knowledge, Skills & Abilities

Personal computers, printers, scanners, computer software applications, local area networks, cell phones and business telephone operations
Network Routing and Switching fundamentals such as vlan, spanning tree, trunking, IP addressing/subnetting, etc.
Networking and ethernet standards, copper and fiber design and installations
Wireless infrastructure design and management
vmWare Virtual Server Management
Active Directory Domain Services including Domain Controllers, DHCP, DNS, Group policy
Azure Principles
Role-Based Access Controls (RBAC)
Multi-Factor Authentication (MFA) principles
Network Security fundamentals including perimeter, endpoint, server, mobile, and cloud
PBX and Cloud telephony (UCaaS)
Effective prioritization and time management techniques
Ability to effectively deliver clear, detailed, and correct verbal and written communication predicting questions and concerns, understanding opposing ideas, concepts, and options.
Ability to research, define, and validate a variety of information and statistical data and materials.
Ability to identify, prioritize, delegate, and complete required tasks in the manner and timeframe required.

Minimum Qualifications: Bachelor’s degree from an accredited college or university in an applicable area of study and a minimum of four (4) years’ progressively responsible experience performing the above and related duties; or any combination of education, training and experience which provides the required knowledge, skills, and abilities to perform the essential functions of the job. A valid driver’s license is required. Must complete required NIMS level training within the first six months of hire.

Physical Demands: Frequently required to walk, sit, and kneel, use hands to finger, handle or feel, reach with hands and arms, climb or balance, talk or hear, and occasionally lift and/or move up to approx. 10 lbs.

Due to the 24/7 nature of IT systems, this role is up to 100% on-site work. This position will also participate in an on-call rotation for emergency issues outside of business hours.
