Summary
On-site System Administrator at a federal credit union who designs, builds, and maintains physical and virtual server infrastructure on-premise and in the cloud — handling patching, backups, user accounts, GPOs, and automation via PowerShell, Bash, and Ansible — while managing vendors and serving as an escalation point for IT support.
Location: Albuquerque, NM 87109
Required work schedule: (not a remote or hybrid position)
- Monday to Friday: 8:00 AM to 5:00 PM
- Evenings and weekends as needed

Reporting directly to the Lead System Administrator, the System Administrator I is responsible for designing, building, and implementing virtual and physical server infrastructure both on premise and in the cloud. This includes planning, developing, installing, configuring, maintaining, supporting, and optimizing all systems to dynamically address the needs of a growing enterprise. Further, the system administrator must stay apprised of updates available for systems and deploying them within policy guidelines.
Duties and responsibilities
Technical Oversight & Review
- Maintain and support all credit union servers, physical and virtual environments. With guidance, document changes and maintain security on the systems to Sandia Area standards.
- Maintain user accounts on networks and applications. Ensure proper permissions are established within the network operating systems.
- Control and implement new servers and related software, ensuring that software is operating on the most current release versions. Seek guidance and research business impact prior to deploying new software.
- Install hardware and software patches/updates on a regular basis to keep the credit union's security posture high. Identify better approaches to implement security.
- Review and assess system security architecture to ensure a practical and secure design is implemented.
- Run and schedule scripts to automate reporting and other processes (Powershell, Bash, Ansible, OpCon, etc.).
- Update, modify, and optimize GPO's as necessary.
- Ensure critical backups are successful and useable; work with backup vendor on any issues.
Vendor Support
- Effectively engage with external vendors to identify, evaluate, and implement solutions for complex IT support challenges.
- Coordinate vendor relationships to ensure timely resolution of issues, manage service level agreements (SLAs), and escalate concerns when necessary.
- Strong negotiation and communication skills are essential for ensuring vendors meet the needs of the credit union and align with organizational objectives.
Department Operational Support
- Act as an escalation resource for IT Support Specialists under the direction of the system administrator lead.
- Create and update documentation for the department as needed, keeping abreast of new and changing technologies and methodologies for implementation.
- Communicate problems, delays, and unusual situations to the lead system administrator.
- Work with the larger IT team as needed on projects such as applications, front line implementations, and databases.
- Participate in on-call support rotation.
