About the role
The Systems Administrator will be responsible for administering and supporting Charlton Brown's operating systems, servers, cloud platforms, network environment, websites and associated business applications. The successful applicant will help ensure that our ICT systems remain secure, reliable, properly documented and capable of supporting staff, students and organisational operations. The position will also contribute to infrastructure improvement, system automation and technology projects across the organisation.
Key responsibilities
- Install, configure, administer, maintain and support operating systems, servers, virtual machines, cloud services, network systems and associated software.
- Administer Microsoft 365, Microsoft Active Directory, user accounts, security groups, permissions, licences, email services and access controls.
- Monitor the availability, security, integrity, capacity and performance of servers, networks, websites, cloud platforms and other ICT systems.
- Diagnose, resolve and repair server, workstation, software, network and communications infrastructure faults.
- Provide timely technical support to staff and other authorised users, including investigating and resolving system incidents and access issues.
- Configure and maintain Linux-based virtual machines and cloud infrastructure hosted on platforms such as Microsoft Azure and Amazon Web Services.
- Implement and maintain system security controls, including identity and access management, software updates, security patches, endpoint protection and appropriate permissions.
- Administer backup, recovery and business-continuity arrangements and periodically test the effectiveness of recovery procedures.
- Review system logs, alerts and performance information to identify faults, security risks, capacity constraints and opportunities for improvement.
- Monitor and adjust network and system performance to ensure that infrastructure components operate together effectively.
About you
- A relevant bachelor's degree in information technology, computer science, computer or software systems engineering, or a closely related discipline.
- Relevant professional experience in systems administration, ICT infrastructure support or a comparable technical position.
- Demonstrated experience administering Microsoft 365 and Microsoft Active Directory environments.
- Experience supporting operating systems, servers, user accounts, access permissions, workstations and network infrastructure.
- Practical knowledge of cloud platforms such as Microsoft Azure or Amazon Web Services.
- Experience configuring or maintaining virtual machines, including Linux-based environments.
- Experience diagnosing and resolving server, software, workstation, network and user-access problems.
- Knowledge of system security, patch management, backup, recovery, monitoring and performance optimisation.
- Strong written and verbal communication skills and the ability to explain technical matters clearly to non-technical users.
- Strong organisational, analytical, troubleshooting and time-management abilities.
