We are on the lookout for a Systems Developer to join our team! As the Systems Developer, you will provide ongoing development, maintenance, troubleshooting, and production support for an existing enterprise application built in PowerBuilder 10.5. The primary responsibility is to support and enhance the current PowerBuilder application, resolve defects, analyze existing code, implement business-requested changes, and maintain reliable database and interface processing. This position is intended for an experienced PowerBuilder developer who is comfortable working with a mature, business-critical application and an established codebase.
- Support, maintain, troubleshoot, and enhance an existing production application developed in PowerBuilder 10.5.
- Analyze existing PowerBuilder code, PowerScript, DataWindows, windows, menus, user objects, functions, and PBL libraries to understand current application behavior and business logics.
- Diagnose and resolve application defects, production issues, performance problems, and data-related issues within the existing PowerBuilder application.
- Modify existing PowerBuilder functionality and develop enhancements based on business, client, regulatory, and operational requirements.
- Create, modify, and troubleshoot PowerBuilder DataWindows, including retrieval, update logic, validation, presentation, and database interaction.
- Work with Sybase SQL Anywhere and Microsoft SQL Server databases, including SQL queries, stored procedures, views, tables, data corrections, and performance troubleshooting.
- Trace application processing from the PowerBuilder user interface through business logic and database transactions to identify the root cause of issues.
- Maintain and support existing interfaces, batch processes, imports, exports, EDI processes, APIs, web services, and other integrations used by the application.
- Review programming requests and determine how requested changes will affect existing PowerBuilder components, database objects, interfaces, and business processes.
- Meet with business users and subject-matter experts to understand application issues, enhancement requests, and expected system behavior.
- Document proposed changes, affected PowerBuilder objects, database components, testing requirements, and expected results before implementation.
- Perform unit testing, debugging, regression testing, and implementation support for PowerBuilder application changes.
- Investigate and correct production data issues while maintaining data integrity and following established change-control procedures.
- Support application deployments, configuration changes, and production releases related to the existing PowerBuilder environment.
- Maintain existing source code and development libraries using established source-control and development procedures.
- Document existing PowerBuilder functionality, business rules, interfaces, database dependencies, and application architecture.
- Work collaboratively with developers, analysts, database administrators, help desk staff, and business users to resolve application issues.
- Provide technical support and knowledge transfer to other IS staff regarding the existing PowerBuilder application.
- Assist with future modernization or migration initiatives by documenting and understanding the existing PowerBuilder 10.5 codebase and dependencies.
- Perform other duties as assigned.
- Strong hands-on knowledge of PowerBuilder development and application support, preferably PowerBuilder 10.5.
- Strong knowledge of PowerScript, DataWindows, PBL libraries, user objects, windows, menus, functions, and event-driven PowerBuilder development.
- Ability to read, understand, troubleshoot, and safely modify an established PowerBuilder codebase developed by other programmers.
- Strong SQL skills and experience troubleshooting application/database interactions in Sybase SQL Anywhere and/or Microsoft SQL Server.
- Ability to diagnose production issues and determine whether the root cause is application code, database logic, data, configuration, or an external interface.
- Experience supporting mature or legacy enterprise applications where stability, regression testing, and understanding existing business logic are critical.
- Ability to interact effectively with developers, functional experts, client managers, and end users.
- Ability to manage multiple support issues and development requests while shifting priorities as business needs change.
- Able to work independently, use sound judgment, and clearly document technical findings and application changes.
Minimum Qualifications:
- Bachelor’s degree in Computer Science, Information Systems, or a related field, or equivalent relevant professional experience.
- At least three years of professional PowerBuilder development experience; strong experience supporting existing PowerBuilder applications is required.
- Hands-on experience with PowerBuilder 10.5 is strongly preferred. Candidates with significant experience in closely related PowerBuilder versions and the ability to support a PowerBuilder 10.5 codebase may also be considered.
- Demonstrated experience maintaining, debugging, and enhancing existing PowerBuilder applications rather than only developing new applications.
- Experience with PowerScript, DataWindows, PBL libraries, application objects, user objects, windows, menus, and PowerBuilder database connectivity.
- Experience with Sybase SQL Anywhere and/or Microsoft SQL Server, including writing and troubleshooting SQL.
- Experience troubleshooting production applications and resolving issues involving application code, database transactions, interfaces, and data.
- Experience with source control, software testing, change management, and production deployment processes.
- Experience with C#, .NET, APIs, web services, or application modernization is a plus but is not the primary focus of this position.
- Ability to work effectively in a fast-paced environment supporting a business-critical existing application.
