Systems Engineer
Nectar is NZ-owned and Christchurch-born, now recognised as one of NZ's up-and-coming leading cybersecurity providers for the SMB space. We've built our reputation by pairing sharp technical delivery with genuine partnership - clients come to us for guidance they can trust, not just tickets closed.
We're looking for a Systems Engineer in Auckland to be the technical backbone for our clients' Microsoft-centric environments. You'll be the person Service Desk escalates to when things get genuinely hard - diagnosing root cause, designing the fix, and making sure the client actually understands what's happening and why.
This isn't a queue-clearing role. You'll own problems end-to-end, spot the recurring issue behind three separate tickets, and recommend the change that stops it happening again. You'll work directly with clients, which means translating technical risk into business impact - no jargon, no over-explaining, just clarity.
What you'll actually be doing
Acting as the escalation point for issues Service Desk Engineers can't resolve - you diagnose, you fix, you close the loop.
Owning projects and client concerns from start to finish, not handing them off halfway.
Logging, categorising, and prioritising with enough judgement to know what's urgent versus what's important.
Keeping clients and internal teams in the loop on resolution plans - no one should have to chase you for a status update.
Spotting the improvement or efficiency gain most people would miss, and putting it forward.
Staying on top of your own admin - calendars, timesheets, testing docs - so the team around you can plan with confidence.
What you'll bring
Solid depth across the Microsoft stack - certifications are a strong plus, but demonstrated hands-on experience matters more.
The judgement to know when something's a technical problem and when it's actually a business or relationship problem - and to act accordingly.
Comfort talking to business owners in plain English, not acronyms.
Working knowledge of networking and hardware troubleshooting.
A genuinely self-managing streak - you don't need someone checking in to know the work's getting done.
Resilience and a "figure it out" mindset when something doesn't go to plan the first time.
Why Nectar
You'll be part of a sharp team where your input changes outcomes - not lost in a large corporate IT department. We invest in our people's growth and give real autonomy to engineers who've earned it. If you want technical variety, direct client relationships, and a company that's serious about doing security and IT properly, we'd like to talk.
This role will be primarily a work-from-home role in the first instance while Nectar builds its presence in Auckland. Once we have an established office, this will change to an office-based role with flexible work arrangements. It will be required that you spend your first week with Nectar in our Christchurch office for training and to explore our culture, with possible further time in Christchurch over the following months for follow-up training and social events.
Apply now - we're moving quickly on this one.
